Vehicle: 2018 Genesis G80 3.8L

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a persistent clunking noise coming from the front end of my 2018 Genesis G80 3.8L, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It seems to be more pronounced on the driver's side, but it's hard to tell for sure.

The car has about 75,000 miles on it, and I haven't had any major suspension work done before. It's not affecting the steering or braking that I can tell, but the noise is definitely concerning.

Has anyone with a G80 experienced something similar? What are the common culprits for this kind of sound? I'm hoping it's something relatively simple I can check myself before taking it to a shop. Any advice or diagnostic tips would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2018 Genesis G80 is a common symptom of several potential issues. Addressing this promptly is important for both ride comfort and safety.

  1. Initial Inspection & Diagnosis:

    • Listen Carefully: Try to determine if the clunk is more noticeable when turning, braking, or just going over bumps. This can help narrow down the source.
    • Visual Check: With the car safely parked on a level surface, visually inspect the suspension components around the front wheels. Look for any obvious signs of damage, leaks (from struts), or loose parts.
  2. Common Causes for Front Suspension Clunking:

    • Worn Sway Bar End Links or Bushings: These are very common culprits. The end links connect the sway bar to the control arms, and their bushings can wear out, causing metal-on-metal contact and a clunking sound, especially over uneven surfaces.
    • Worn Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame. Their rubber bushings can degrade over time, leading to excessive play and noise.
    • Bad Strut Mounts or Worn Struts: The strut mounts isolate the strut from the chassis. If they fail, they can cause a clunk. Worn struts themselves can also contribute to noise and poor ride quality.
    • Loose Caliper Bolts: While less common for a 'clunk,' loose brake caliper bolts can cause a rattling or clunking sound, especially when hitting bumps or braking.
    • Loose Lug Nuts: Always a good first check for any wheel-related noise. Ensure all lug nuts are torqued correctly.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • If a quick visual inspection doesn't reveal any obvious issues, or if you're not comfortable performing a more in-depth inspection (which often requires lifting the vehicle and checking for play in various components), it's best to take your G80 to a qualified mechanic.
    • Suspension components are critical for vehicle handling and safety. A professional can accurately diagnose the problem using specialized tools and techniques, such as a pry bar to check for play in ball joints and bushings. They can also ensure proper torque on all fasteners and recommend necessary repairs to restore your vehicle's ride quality and safety.
