Vehicle: 2018 Genesis G80 3.8L

Hey everyone,

I've been hearing a really annoying clunking noise coming from the front end of my 2018 Genesis G80 3.8L. It seems to happen most often when I go over small bumps or uneven pavement, and sometimes when I'm turning at low speeds. It's not a constant sound, but it's definitely noticeable and making me a bit worried.

I've checked the tire pressure and given a quick visual inspection, but I don't see anything obviously loose or broken. The car has about 75,000 miles on it now. Has anyone else experienced something similar with their G80 or other Genesis models? What could be causing this, and is it something I should be really concerned about?

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I take it into the dealership.

Hello John,

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2018 Genesis G80 is a common complaint and can stem from several issues. It's important to address this promptly as it can affect handling and safety.

Here are the most common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Worn Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common culprit. The bushings or ball joints within the end links can wear out, causing a clunking sound, especially over bumps or when the suspension articulates.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: Both upper and lower control arm bushings can deteriorate over time, leading to play and noise. A visual inspection might show cracks or tears in the rubber.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The strut mounts, which attach the strut assembly to the vehicle's chassis, can wear out. The bearing within the mount can also fail, causing noise, particularly when turning the steering wheel.
  4. Ball Joints: Worn lower or upper ball joints can create clunking sounds. This is a critical component for steering and suspension, so it should be checked carefully.
  5. Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a loose brake caliper can mimic a suspension clunk.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Concern: If the noise is accompanied by a noticeable change in steering feel, vehicle stability, or braking performance, it's crucial to have it inspected by a professional immediately. Driving with severely compromised suspension components can be dangerous.
  • Difficulty Diagnosing: Suspension issues can be tricky to pinpoint without the right tools (like a pry bar to check for play) and experience. If you're uncomfortable performing a detailed inspection or can't identify the source, a qualified mechanic or Genesis dealership will be able to diagnose it accurately.
  • Safety First: Even if the noise seems minor, worn suspension components can lead to premature tire wear, alignment issues, and eventually, component failure. It's always best to err on the side of caution for your safety and the longevity of your vehicle.
