Vehicle: 2017 Genesis G80 3.8L

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a weird issue with my 2017 Genesis G80 3.8L. When I apply the brakes, especially at highway speeds, I feel a distinct pulsation through the brake pedal. It's also accompanied by a vibration in the steering wheel.

It's not constant, but seems to get worse the harder I brake. The car still stops, but it doesn't feel as smooth or confident as it used to. I'm worried it might be something serious.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Has anyone else experienced this with their G80?

This is a very common symptom, and it almost always points to an issue with your brake rotors, specifically 'runout' or warping. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Rotor Warping/Runout: Over time, especially with hard braking or repeated heating and cooling cycles, brake rotors can develop uneven surfaces or become slightly warped. When the brake pads clamp down on a warped rotor, it causes the pulsation you feel in the pedal and the vibration in the steering wheel.
  2. Uneven Pad Deposits: Sometimes, instead of warping, material from the brake pads can deposit unevenly on the rotor surface, creating high spots that mimic the feel of a warped rotor.
  3. Wheel Bearing Issues: Less common, but a worn wheel bearing could also contribute to vibrations, though it's usually accompanied by a humming or grinding noise that changes with speed.

What to do:

  • Inspection: Have a qualified technician inspect your brake system. They will check the runout of your rotors using a dial indicator and assess the condition of your brake pads and calipers.
  • Rotor Replacement/Resurfacing: Depending on the severity, the rotors may need to be resurfaced (turned) or, more commonly, replaced. For Genesis vehicles, replacement is often recommended for optimal performance and safety.
  • Pad Replacement: It's good practice to replace brake pads whenever rotors are replaced to ensure even wear and proper bedding.

When to see a shop: This issue requires immediate attention. While the car still stops, compromised braking performance can be a safety hazard. Schedule an appointment with your trusted mechanic or Genesis service center as soon as possible. Driving with warped rotors can also lead to premature wear on other suspension components.
