Vehicle: 2018 Genesis G80 3.8L

Hey everyone,

I've noticed a persistent squealing sound coming from the brakes on my 2018 Genesis G80 (3.8L trim). It's most noticeable when I'm coming to a stop, especially at lower speeds. It's been happening for about a week now and seems to be getting a bit louder.

I've got around 55,000 miles on it, and I haven't had the pads or rotors replaced yet. Could this just be normal wear and tear, or is it something more serious? I'm hoping to get some insight before I take it to a shop.

Any thoughts or similar experiences with your G80s?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Squealing brakes are a common issue and can stem from several causes. Given your mileage and the age of your 2018 Genesis G80, it's highly likely related to brake pad wear or rotor condition.

Common Causes:

  1. Worn Brake Pads: Most brake pads have a wear indicator (a small metal tab) that starts to rub against the rotor when the pad material gets low, producing a high-pitched squeal. This is the most frequent cause.
  2. Rotor Condition: Rotors can become glazed, warped, or develop an uneven surface, which can cause squealing or grinding. Rust buildup on the rotor surface, especially after rain or washing, can also cause temporary noise.
  3. Contamination: Oil, grease, or brake fluid on the pads or rotors can cause squealing. Road debris can also get lodged in the caliper.
  4. Improper Installation: If pads were recently replaced, incorrect installation or lack of proper lubrication on caliper components can lead to noise.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the squealing turns into a grinding noise, it means your pads are completely worn, and the metal backing plate is rubbing directly on the rotor. This can cause significant damage and is unsafe.
  • Soon: If the squealing is consistent and not just temporary (e.g., after rain). A professional inspection will confirm the cause and recommend appropriate action.

Diagnostics & Solutions:

  1. Visual Inspection: Check your brake pads for wear. You might be able to see them through the wheel spokes. If they look very thin (less than 3-4mm), they need replacement.
  2. Rotor Check: Look for deep grooves, rust pitting, or discoloration on the rotors.
  3. Professional Service: A technician will inspect all brake components, including pads, rotors, calipers, and brake fluid. They will advise on replacement or resurfacing of rotors if necessary. For your 2018 G80, at 55,000 miles, a full brake service (pads and possibly rotors) is likely due.
