High Mileage G90 5.0 - Time for Transmission Fluid Change?

Vehicle: 2016 Genesis G90 5.0 Ultimate

Hello Genesis community,

I own a 2016 Genesis G90 5.0 Ultimate with around 95,000 miles on the odometer. It's been a fantastic car, but lately, I've noticed a slight hesitation when shifting, particularly from 2nd to 3rd gear, and sometimes a less smooth engagement when downshifting. It's not severe, but it's definitely noticeable compared to how it used to be.

I've read conflicting information online about transmission fluid changes for 'sealed for life' transmissions. My owner's manual doesn't explicitly state a change interval for normal driving conditions, but I'm thinking with this many miles, it might be a good idea. Has anyone with a similar G90 or other Genesis model with the 8-speed automatic done a transmission fluid and filter change? What was your experience, and what's the general consensus on this for high-mileage vehicles?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Your observation about transmission behavior at high mileage is valid, and addressing it proactively can extend the life of your transmission.

  1. 'Sealed for Life' Misconception: While many manufacturers market transmissions as 'sealed for life,' this often refers to the expected life of the first owner or a typical lease term, not the entire operational life of the vehicle. Transmission fluid, like any other fluid, degrades over time and mileage due to heat, shearing, and contamination.
  2. Recommended Interval for Severe Conditions: Even if your owner's manual doesn't list a 'normal' interval, it often recommends a service interval (e.g., every 60,000 miles) for 'severe' driving conditions. These conditions often include frequent short trips, heavy city driving, towing, or driving in extreme temperatures – which describe a lot of typical driving. Given your 95,000 miles, a fluid and filter change is highly advisable.
  3. Causes of Shifting Issues:
    • Degraded Fluid: Old fluid loses its lubricating and cooling properties, leading to increased friction and heat, which can cause hesitant or harsh shifts.
    • Clogged Filter: A dirty transmission filter restricts fluid flow, impacting hydraulic pressure and shift quality.
    • Worn Clutch Packs/Solenoids: While fluid can't fix mechanical wear, fresh fluid can sometimes improve the performance of components struggling with degraded fluid.
  4. Fluid & Filter Change: A proper transmission fluid and filter change involves draining the pan, replacing the filter, and refilling with the correct OEM-specified fluid. A 'flush' using a machine can be more thorough but should only be done by a reputable shop to avoid potential issues if not performed correctly. Ensure the correct Hyundai/Genesis OEM fluid (e.g., SP-IV or SP-IV RR, check your manual) is used.
  5. When to See a Shop: Given the complexity of automatic transmissions, this is generally best left to a professional. If the hesitation worsens, or if you experience any slipping, grinding noises, or a 'check engine' light related to the transmission, seek immediate professional diagnosis.
