Vehicle: 2020 Genesis G90 5.0L

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2020 Genesis G90 5.0L with about 30,000 miles on it. I've noticed recently that the car seems to be pulling slightly to the right, and I'm seeing some pretty uneven wear on my front tires, particularly on the outer edge of the passenger side tire.

I haven't hit any major potholes or curbs that I can recall, and the issue seems to have developed gradually over the last few months. The ride itself feels fine, but the pulling is annoying, and I'm worried about my tires.

Could this just be an alignment issue, or is there something else I should be looking at? Any advice for a G90 owner?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Uneven tire wear and a vehicle pulling to one side are classic symptoms of an alignment problem, but they can also indicate worn suspension components. For your 2020 Genesis G90, addressing this promptly is important to prevent premature tire replacement and ensure safe handling.

Common Causes:

  1. Wheel Alignment: This is the most common cause. Misaligned wheels can cause the car to pull and lead to uneven tire wear (e.g., toe-in/toe-out issues). Even minor bumps can throw off alignment.
  2. Worn Suspension Components: Worn ball joints, control arm bushings, or tie rod ends can introduce play into the suspension, making it impossible to hold an alignment and causing the car to pull.
  3. Tire Issues: A damaged tire (e.g., internal belt separation) or uneven tire pressure can cause a pull. Also, radial pull can occur if tires are mismatched or have manufacturing defects.
  4. Brake Drag: A caliper that isn't fully releasing can cause one wheel to drag, leading to a pull. This is usually accompanied by heat from that wheel.
  5. Steering System Issues: Less common, but issues within the power steering system or steering rack could contribute to a pull.

When to See a Shop:

  • Soon: Uneven tire wear means you're literally throwing money away on tires. A persistent pull also affects handling and can be a safety concern, especially at highway speeds or during emergency braking.

Diagnostics & Solutions:

  1. Tire Inspection & Rotation: First, visually inspect all tires for damage and check their pressure. Sometimes, rotating the tires (front to back) can help determine if the pull follows a specific tire or remains with the vehicle.
  2. Professional Alignment Check: A reputable shop will perform a four-wheel alignment check using specialized equipment. They will measure camber, caster, and toe angles.
  3. Suspension Inspection: Before performing an alignment, the technician should thoroughly inspect all front and rear suspension components for wear or damage. If any parts are worn, they must be replaced before an alignment can be accurately performed.
  4. Brake System Check: Briefly check if any wheel feels excessively hot after a drive, which could indicate a dragging brake caliper.
