Vehicle: 2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T Advanced

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with the safety features on my 2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T Advanced. The Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) systems have suddenly stopped working. I'm getting a warning message on the dash saying 'Check Blind Spot Safety System' and the BSM lights in the mirrors aren't illuminating.

I've checked the sensors in the rear bumper for any obvious obstructions like dirt or ice, but they seem clear. I haven't been in any accidents or had any body work done recently. It just started happening out of the blue a couple of days ago.

Has anyone else experienced this with their GV70? Is there a common fix or something I should look for? I'm hoping it's not a major sensor replacement.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Malfunctions in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) on your 2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T Advanced are typically electrical or sensor-related. These systems rely on radar sensors, usually located in the rear bumper, and complex wiring and control modules.

Common Causes for BSM/RCTA Malfunction:

  1. Sensor Obstruction: Even if they appear clear, minor dirt, mud, snow, or even a sticker on the bumper can interfere with radar signals.
  2. Faulty Radar Sensor: The sensors themselves can fail due to internal defects, moisture intrusion, or physical damage (even minor bumps).
  3. Wiring Issues: A damaged or corroded wire leading to the sensors or control module can disrupt communication.
  4. Control Module Failure: The BSM/RCTA control module could be faulty.
  5. Software Glitch: Less common for a persistent issue, but a temporary software bug could cause a false warning.

Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Thorough Sensor Inspection: Clean the rear bumper area where the sensors are located very thoroughly. Ensure no aftermarket accessories (trailer hitches, bumper guards) are blocking the view.
  2. Vehicle Restart: Sometimes, simply turning the vehicle off, letting it sit for a few minutes, and restarting can clear a temporary glitch.
  3. Check for Recalls/TSBs: Check with a Genesis dealer if there are any active recalls or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to the BSM/RCTA system for your specific model year.

OBD Codes to Look For:

When these systems malfunction, they typically store diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the vehicle's body control module (BCM) or specific ADAS modules. These are often C-codes (Chassis) or B-codes (Body), such as:

  • C1611: Radar sensor communication error.
  • C1620: Radar sensor internal fault.
  • B1617: Blind Spot Detection System Indicator Circuit Malfunction.

When to See a Shop:

If a thorough cleaning and vehicle restart don't resolve the issue, it's crucial to have your GV70 inspected by a Genesis dealership. ADAS systems are complex and require specialized diagnostic equipment to accurately pinpoint sensor failures, wiring issues, or control module problems. Furthermore, after any sensor replacement, these systems often require recalibration to ensure proper function, which only a dealership or specialized ADAS shop can perform correctly.
