Vehicle: 2023 Genesis GV70 2.5T Advanced

I'm hearing a noticeable clunking noise from the front suspension of my 2023 Genesis GV70 2.5T Advanced. It's most apparent when going over bumps, uneven roads, or even just turning into my driveway at low speeds.

The car only has about 8,000 miles on it, so I'm quite surprised and concerned about this. I wouldn't expect a brand new luxury SUV to be making such noises.

Is this something common with the GV70, or could it indicate a problem with a specific component? What should I do about it?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension of a 2023 Genesis GV70 with only 8,000 miles is definitely not normal and indicates an issue that needs to be addressed promptly. This is not typical for a new luxury vehicle.

  1. Potential Causes of Front Suspension Clunking:

    • Loose or Worn Sway Bar Links: These are a very common source of clunking noises, especially over uneven surfaces or when turning. The bushings or ball joints in the links can wear prematurely.
    • Worn or Damaged Bushings: Control arm bushings, subframe bushings, or strut mount bushings can deteriorate, allowing metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement.
    • Loose Fasteners: Bolts securing suspension components (control arms, subframe, struts) can sometimes loosen over time, especially after factory assembly, leading to play and noise.
    • Faulty Strut/Shock Absorber: A strut that is failing internally or has a loose mounting can produce a clunking sound. While less common at such low mileage, it's not impossible.
    • Ball Joints: Worn lower or upper ball joints can also create clunking, particularly when the suspension articulates.
    • Tie Rod Ends: Loose or worn inner or outer tie rod ends can contribute to front-end noises and affect steering.
  2. Why it's a Concern:

    • Suspension components are critical for vehicle handling, safety, and ride comfort. A clunking noise suggests there is excessive play or wear in a component that shouldn't be present in a new vehicle.
    • Ignoring it can lead to accelerated wear on other components, compromised handling, and potentially more expensive repairs down the line.

What to Do:

  • Do Not Delay: Since your GV70 is a 2023 model with very low mileage, it is well within its factory warranty period. This issue should be covered.

When to See a Shop: Schedule an appointment with your Genesis dealership immediately. Clearly describe the noise (when it occurs, what type of surfaces, at what speeds). A qualified technician will need to perform a thorough inspection of the front suspension components. They will check for:

  • Loose bolts or nuts.
  • Worn or damaged bushings on control arms, sway bar links, and strut mounts.
  • Play in ball joints and tie rod ends.
  • Integrity of the struts/shock absorbers.

Insist that they identify and rectify the source of the noise. This is a warranty item and should be repaired at no cost to you.
