Rough Ride & Clunking Noise on 2022 Genesis GV70 - Suspension Issue?

Vehicle: 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T

Hello Genesis community,

I'm experiencing a really rough ride and a noticeable clunking noise, especially from the front end, on my 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T. It's got about 25,000 miles on it and this issue started a few weeks ago.

The clunking happens most often when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement. The ride quality has also deteriorated significantly; it feels much stiffer and less composed than it used to. I have the adaptive suspension, and I'm wondering if that could be related.

Has anyone else with a GV70, especially a newer model, had similar issues? What was the fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A rough ride and clunking noises on a relatively new vehicle like your 2022 Genesis GV70 are definitely concerning and point towards a potential suspension component issue. Given you have the adaptive suspension, there are a few specific areas to investigate.

Common Causes:

  1. Worn or Damaged Bushings: Suspension bushings (control arm bushings, sway bar bushings) can wear out or crack, leading to metal-on-metal contact and clunking sounds, especially over bumps.
  2. Sway Bar End Links: These small links connect the sway bar to the suspension. If they become loose or worn, they can cause significant clunking noises.
  3. Struts/Shocks (Adaptive Dampers): While less common on a newer vehicle, a failing adaptive damper (strut or shock) could cause a harsh ride and potentially clunking if it's not functioning correctly or has internal damage. A leak might also be visible.
  4. Loose Fasteners: Sometimes, suspension components can simply become loose over time, leading to play and noise.
  5. Ball Joints: Worn ball joints can cause clunking and affect steering stability.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Any persistent clunking or significant degradation in ride quality should be addressed promptly. Continuing to drive with worn suspension components can accelerate wear on other parts and compromise vehicle handling and safety.

Diagnostics & Solutions:

  1. Professional Inspection: A qualified technician will need to lift the vehicle and perform a thorough visual and physical inspection of all suspension components. This includes checking for play in ball joints, tie rods, control arms, and inspecting bushings for cracks or wear.
  2. Listen for Specifics: Try to pinpoint exactly when and where the clunking occurs (e.g., turning, hitting bumps, braking) to help the technician narrow down the possibilities.
  3. Adaptive Suspension Scan: Since your GV70 has adaptive suspension, the shop should also perform an OBD-II scan for any fault codes related to the electronic damping system, even if no dashboard lights are on. Issues with sensors or the control module could affect damper performance.
