Uneven tire wear and car pulling to one side on my GV70

Vehicle: 2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T, and I recently noticed that my front tires are wearing very unevenly – specifically, the outer edges are much more worn than the inner edges. On top of that, the car has started to subtly pull to the right when I'm driving straight.

I haven't hit any major potholes or curbs that I can remember. The car has about 30,000 miles on it. I rotate my tires regularly, but this wear pattern is new.

Could this be an alignment issue, or something more serious with the suspension? What should I be looking for?

Uneven tire wear combined with a vehicle pulling to one side on your 2022 Genesis GV70 strongly indicates an issue with your wheel alignment or potentially worn suspension components. Here's a breakdown of the likely causes:

Common Causes:

  1. Wheel Alignment Issues: This is the most common culprit. A misaligned wheel can cause the tire to drag or scrub across the road surface, leading to rapid and uneven wear. Pulling to one side is a classic symptom of incorrect toe or camber settings. For outer edge wear, negative camber or excessive toe-out could be the cause.
  2. Worn Suspension Components: While alignment is often the primary cause, worn or damaged suspension parts can cause the alignment to shift or prevent it from being properly set. This includes:
    • Control arm bushings: If these are worn, they can allow excessive movement.
    • Ball joints: Play in ball joints can affect wheel angles.
    • Tie rod ends: Worn tie rod ends will directly impact steering and alignment.
    • Struts/Shocks: While less likely to cause pulling directly, severely worn struts can affect ride height and contribute to alignment issues.
  3. Tire Issues: Less likely given the pulling, but sometimes a damaged tire (e.g., separated belt) can cause a pull. However, the uneven wear pattern usually points away from just a tire defect.

What to do:

  • Professional Alignment Check: The first and most crucial step is to have a reputable shop perform a four-wheel alignment check. They will measure your vehicle's camber, caster, and toe angles and compare them to factory specifications.
  • Suspension Inspection: During the alignment check, the technician should also inspect all suspension and steering components for wear or damage. If worn parts are found, they must be replaced before an accurate alignment can be performed.
  • Tire Replacement: Depending on the severity of the wear, you may need to replace the unevenly worn tires to ensure optimal safety and performance after the alignment is corrected.

When to see a shop: Do not delay addressing this issue. Uneven tire wear significantly shortens tire life, which is costly. More importantly, a vehicle that pulls to one side can be dangerous, especially at higher speeds or during emergency maneuvers, as it compromises steering stability and control. Schedule an alignment and suspension inspection immediately.
