Vehicle: 2021 Genesis GV80 3.5T

Hi everyone,

I'm having an intermittent but annoying problem with my 2021 Genesis GV80 3.5T. Sometimes, when I try to start the car, I get a 'Smart Key Not Detected' message on the dash, even though the key fob is clearly inside the vehicle (usually in my pocket or the cupholder). It prevents the car from starting.

I've tried replacing the battery in the key fob, but the issue still pops up randomly. Sometimes I have to move the key fob around the cabin, or even press it against the start button, for it to finally recognize it. It's not every time, but enough to be concerning.

Has anyone else experienced this 'Smart Key Not Detected' message with their GV80 or other Genesis models? Is it a common problem, or could it be a fault with the car's receiver or antenna system? Any insights would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Smart Key Not Detected' message in a modern Genesis vehicle like your 2021 GV80 indicates a communication breakdown between the key fob and the vehicle's immobilizer/smart key system. This system relies on radio frequency (RF) signals to verify the key's presence and authorization.

Common Causes for Smart Key Detection Issues:

  1. Key Fob Battery (Even if Replaced): While you've replaced it, ensure it's a fresh, high-quality battery and inserted correctly. Low-quality or old 'new' batteries can sometimes be an issue.
  2. RF Interference: External sources like strong radio signals, power lines, or even other electronic devices (phones, laptops, other key fobs) inside the cabin can interfere with the key fob's signal.
  3. Vehicle's Receiver/Antenna System: The GV80 has multiple antennas strategically placed throughout the cabin to detect the key fob. If one of these antennas or the smart key control module itself is faulty, detection can become intermittent.
  4. Key Fob Malfunction: The key fob itself could have an internal fault, even with a good battery.
  5. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to the smart key antennas or control module can disrupt communication.

When to See a Shop:

If replacing the key fob battery doesn't resolve the issue, and you've ruled out obvious interference, it's best to take your GV80 to a Genesis dealership. They have specialized diagnostic equipment that can:

  • Read specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the smart key control module or immobilizer system.
  • Test the signal strength and functionality of the vehicle's smart key antennas.
  • Check for software updates for the smart key system.
  • Diagnose internal faults within the key fob or the vehicle's control modules.

DIY Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Try a Second Key Fob: If you have another key fob, try using it. If the second fob works flawlessly, the issue is likely with the first fob.
  2. Reposition Key Fob: As you've noticed, sometimes simply moving the fob to a different location (e.g., closer to the center console or directly against the start button, as per the owner's manual for emergency starting) can help.
  3. Check for Interference: Remove all other electronic devices from the immediate vicinity of the key fob and the vehicle's interior to rule out interference.

OBD Codes (Examples):

Issues with the smart key system can generate specific 'B' (Body) or 'U' (Network Communication) codes. Examples might include:

  • B1602: Immobilizer Transponder Malfunction
  • B1605: Smart Key Battery Low (even if you've replaced it, the car might still detect it as low if the fob is faulty)
  • U0167: Lost Communication With Immobilizer Control Module
  • U0231: Lost Communication With Smart Key Control Module

These codes will guide the technician to the specific area of concern within the system.
