Vehicle: 2022 Genesis GV80 2.5T AWD

Hey everyone,

My 2022 Genesis GV80 2.5T AWD has been acting up lately. The transmission has started shifting really hard, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes from 3rd to 4th. It's not smooth at all, very clunky.

On two occasions now, it's gone into what feels like limp mode, where it limits speed and RPMs. Turning the car off and on again seems to reset it temporarily, but the harsh shifting always comes back. I haven't seen any check engine lights, but I haven't scanned it yet either.

This is a relatively new car, so I'm pretty concerned. Has anyone experienced transmission issues like this with their GV80, especially the 2.5T? What could be causing this, and what should I look for when I scan it?

Transmission issues like harsh shifting and intermittent limp mode on your 2022 Genesis GV80 2.5T are concerning, especially on a newer vehicle. Even without a check engine light, there are likely fault codes stored in the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Engine Control Unit (ECU).

Here's what could be causing these symptoms and what to investigate:

  1. Low Transmission Fluid: While less common on newer sealed transmissions, a low fluid level can cause pressure issues leading to harsh shifts and limp mode. Check the fluid level if possible, or have a shop verify it.
  2. Faulty Transmission Solenoids: The solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage different gears. If one or more solenoids are sticking or failing, it can lead to incorrect gear engagement and harsh shifts. This is a common cause for such symptoms.
  3. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Issues: The TCM might be experiencing an internal fault or receiving incorrect signals from other sensors (like speed sensors, throttle position sensor). A software update or reset might sometimes resolve minor glitches, but a faulty module would require replacement.
  4. Valve Body Problems: The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. Issues within the valve body, such as worn bores or sticky valves, can cause shifting problems.
  5. Sensor Malfunctions: Sensors like the input/output speed sensors provide crucial data to the TCM. If these sensors are sending incorrect readings, the TCM can command incorrect shifts or trigger limp mode.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Since your vehicle is going into limp mode, it's crucial to have it inspected promptly to prevent further damage. Driving in limp mode for extended periods can exacerbate the problem.
  • Professional Scan: Even without a CEL, a professional scan tool can access specific transmission fault codes (P-codes, B-codes, C-codes) stored in the TCM. These codes are vital for accurate diagnosis.
  • A Genesis dealership or a specialized transmission shop will have the necessary diagnostic equipment and expertise to accurately identify the root cause, whether it's a sensor, solenoid, valve body, or a more significant internal transmission issue.
