Vehicle: 2021 Genesis GV80 2.5T

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2021 Genesis GV80 2.5T. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control light (ESC) have come on and are staying on. This happened suddenly a couple of days ago, and they haven't turned off since.

The car seems to be driving fine, but I know these lights indicate a problem with crucial safety systems. I haven't noticed any weird braking behavior, but I'm concerned about driving without these systems fully functional.

Has anyone with a newer GV80 experienced this? Could it be a simple sensor issue, or something more complex? I'm wondering if there are common OBD codes associated with this.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control (ESC) lights illuminate on your 2021 Genesis GV80, it almost always points to an issue within the vehicle's wheel speed sensor system or the ABS control module itself. These systems are interconnected, and a fault in one often triggers warnings for both.

Common Causes:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor fails, gets dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/ESC system loses crucial data, triggering the lights.
  2. Damaged ABS Reluctor Ring: The reluctor ring (or tone ring) is a toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it's cracked, corroded, or damaged, the sensor will get incorrect readings.
  3. ABS Control Module Failure: While less common, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair.
  4. Low Brake Fluid: Extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger brake-related warnings, but usually, it's a separate brake warning light.
  5. Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors leading to the wheel speed sensors or ABS module can also cause intermittent or constant warnings.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: While the car might seem to drive normally, your ABS and ESC systems are disabled when these lights are on. This means you won't have anti-lock braking or traction control in an emergency braking or slippery situation, which is a significant safety concern. Get it diagnosed as soon as possible.

Diagnostics & Solutions:

  1. OBD-II Scan: The first step is to connect an advanced OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS/ESC specific codes (not just generic powertrain codes). Common codes for wheel speed sensor issues include:
    • C1200 - C1204: Wheel Speed Sensor (Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right) Circuit Malfunction.
    • C1210 - C1213: Wheel Speed Sensor Signal Fault.
    • Other codes like C1604 (ABS ECU Malfunction) might indicate a control module issue.
  2. Visual Inspection: After getting the codes, a technician will visually inspect the suspect wheel speed sensor(s) and their wiring for damage, dirt, or corrosion. They will also check the reluctor ring.
  3. Sensor Replacement: If a sensor is faulty, it will be replaced. This is often a straightforward repair.
  4. Further Diagnostics: If the sensors and wiring are intact, further diagnostics on the ABS control module or hydraulic unit may be necessary.
