Vehicle: 2021 Genesis GV80 3.5T

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out because I'm really concerned about my 2021 Genesis GV80 3.5T. It has about 45,000 miles, and recently I've started hearing a distinct knocking noise from the engine, especially noticeable when it's cold or under light load. It sounds like it's coming from the bottom end.

On top of that, I've noticed the car is consuming a lot more oil than it used to. I'm having to add a quart or two between oil changes, which wasn't the case before. There's no check engine light on yet, but the knocking is getting louder.

Has anyone with the GV80 3.5T experienced this kind of engine noise or excessive oil consumption? What was the cause? I'm worried this could be a major engine problem.

An engine knocking noise combined with high oil consumption on your 2021 Genesis GV80 3.5T at 45,000 miles is a serious concern that warrants immediate professional attention. These symptoms often indicate internal engine wear or damage. Here’s a breakdown of potential causes:

  1. Low Oil Level / Oil Pressure:

    • Cause: The most straightforward cause of engine knocking and accelerated wear is insufficient lubrication. If your engine is consuming oil, the level could be dropping too low, leading to metal-on-metal contact.
    • Action: Regularly check your oil level and top it off as needed. However, merely adding oil won't address the underlying consumption issue.
  2. Worn Rod Bearings or Main Bearings:

    • Cause: A persistent knocking noise, especially from the bottom end, is a classic symptom of worn connecting rod bearings or main crankshaft bearings. These components are critical for smooth engine operation, and wear can lead to excessive clearance and knocking. High oil consumption can accelerate this wear.
    • Action: This requires significant engine disassembly for inspection and replacement. It's a major repair.
  3. Piston Ring Wear or Damage:

    • Cause: Worn, stuck, or damaged piston rings are a primary cause of excessive oil consumption. If rings aren't sealing properly, oil can enter the combustion chamber and burn off, leading to consumption and potentially affecting compression, which could contribute to knocking.
    • Action: A compression test and leak-down test can help diagnose piston ring issues. Repair involves engine disassembly.
  4. Timing Chain/Tensioner Issues:

    • Cause: While often manifesting as a rattling or ticking, a severely worn timing chain or failing tensioner could, in rare cases, produce a knocking sound if components are impacting each other. This can also affect valve timing and engine efficiency.
    • Action: Professional inspection of the timing components is necessary.

When to See a Shop: Do not delay in getting your GV80 inspected. An engine knocking noise, especially one that is getting louder, coupled with high oil consumption, points to a potentially catastrophic engine failure if not addressed promptly. Continuing to drive the vehicle could lead to further damage, making repairs more extensive and costly. Take your vehicle to a Genesis dealership or a trusted independent mechanic specializing in engine repair immediately. They will need to perform a thorough diagnostic, including checking oil pressure, performing compression and leak-down tests, and potentially using a stethoscope to pinpoint the source of the knock.
