Vehicle: 2018 GMC Acadia Denali

Hello everyone,

I'm having a really annoying problem with the infotainment system in my 2018 GMC Acadia Denali. Lately, it's been freezing up completely while I'm driving, sometimes for several minutes, and then it will randomly reboot itself. This happens with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and even just the radio.

It's not just a minor glitch; sometimes the backup camera won't come on when it's frozen, which is a safety concern. I've tried doing a soft reset by holding down the power button, but it only helps temporarily, if at all.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Acadia? Is there a known software update or a common hardware fault for this model year?

Infotainment system issues like freezing and random reboots are common across many modern vehicles, including your 2018 GMC Acadia Denali. These problems often stem from software glitches, module failures, or sometimes even power supply issues.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Software Update: The most common fix for these types of issues is a software update for the infotainment module (often called the Human Machine Interface or HMI module). Dealerships frequently release updates to address bugs and improve stability. This should be your first step.
  2. Hard Reset: While you've tried a soft reset, sometimes disconnecting the vehicle's battery for 15-30 minutes can perform a more thorough reset of all modules, including the infotainment system. Ensure you know your radio code if applicable, though most modern systems don't require one after a power loss.
  3. Check for Loose Connections: Although less common for intermittent issues, a loose or corroded connection to the infotainment module could cause instability. This is harder to check without disassembling parts of the dash.
  4. Module Failure: If software updates and resets don't resolve the issue, the infotainment module itself might be failing. This is a more expensive repair, often requiring replacement and programming by a dealership.
    • Common OBD-II Codes: While infotainment issues don't always trigger powertrain codes, a scan tool might reveal U-codes (network communication codes) related to the HMI module or CAN bus.

When to See a Shop:

  • If a battery disconnect doesn't help, or if you suspect a software update is needed, a GMC dealership is best equipped to perform the necessary diagnostics and updates.
  • If the issue is persistent and affects safety features like the backup camera, it's crucial to have it professionally diagnosed to rule out a failing module or wiring problem.
