Vehicle: 2018 GMC Acadia SLT-2

Hi all,

I'm having some frustrating electrical issues with my 2018 GMC Acadia SLT-2. The infotainment screen frequently freezes up, becoming completely unresponsive. Sometimes it'll just stay on one screen, other times it goes black.

Compounding this, the backup camera has become very intermittent. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times it's just a black screen or severely delayed when I put the car in reverse. It's really unpredictable.

Restarting the car sometimes temporarily fixes both issues, but they always come back. I've tried looking for software updates but haven't found anything specific. Has anyone else experienced this with their Acadia? Any ideas on what might be causing it?

Intermittent freezing of the infotainment system and backup camera issues on your 2018 GMC Acadia are common complaints that often point to software glitches, communication errors, or a failing head unit/module. These systems are highly integrated, so a problem in one area can affect others.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Software Glitch/Update: The first step is to ensure your infotainment system's software is up to date. Sometimes, a simple software bug can cause freezing and communication issues. Check with your GMC dealer or the MyGMC app for available updates. A 'soft reset' of the infotainment system (often by holding down the power button for 10-15 seconds) can sometimes clear temporary glitches.
  2. Loose Connections: Inspect the wiring harness behind the infotainment unit and to the backup camera. Vibrations over time can loosen connections, leading to intermittent functionality. This is more common if any aftermarket work has been done, but can also happen with factory wiring.
  3. Body Control Module (BCM) Issues: The BCM manages many electrical functions, including aspects of the infotainment and camera systems. A faulty BCM or communication issues with it can manifest as the problems you're describing. An OBD-II scan might reveal codes like U0140 (Lost Communication With Body Control Module).
  4. Faulty Head Unit: The infotainment head unit itself could be failing. Internal component degradation can lead to freezing, slow response, and communication errors with connected devices like the backup camera.
  5. Backup Camera Unit Failure: While less likely to cause infotainment freezing, a failing camera unit or its wiring could be the sole cause of the camera's intermittency. However, given both issues, a broader system problem is more probable.

When to See a Shop: If software updates and basic checks don't resolve the issue, it's advisable to take your Acadia to a GMC dealership or a reputable automotive electrical specialist. They have specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint communication errors between modules, test the head unit, and identify specific wiring faults that might not be obvious. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further electrical complications.
