Vehicle: 2019 GMC Acadia Denali

Hi all,

I'm having some frustrating issues with the infotainment system in my 2019 GMC Acadia Denali. The screen frequently freezes, especially when I'm using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Sometimes it goes completely black for a few seconds before restarting, or it just stays frozen until I turn the car off and on again. It's really annoying when I'm trying to use navigation or make a call.

I've tried soft resets by holding down the power button, but the problem keeps coming back. It seems like the system is just buggy or perhaps there's a hardware issue. Has anyone else experienced this with their 2019 Acadia or similar GMC models?

Is there a known fix, a software update, or even a recall for these infotainment systems? I'm hesitant to take it to the dealer without knowing if this is a common problem with a straightforward solution.

Infotainment system issues like freezing, blackouts, and CarPlay/Android Auto glitches are unfortunately not uncommon across various makes and models, including your 2019 GMC Acadia Denali. These systems are complex and rely on a combination of hardware, software, and external device compatibility.

Common Causes:

  1. Software Bugs: The most frequent cause is often a bug in the infotainment system's operating software.
  2. Corrupted Data/Cache: Over time, cached data or corrupted files can lead to performance issues.
  3. Hardware Failure: Less common, but a failing head unit or screen component can cause these symptoms.
  4. Poor USB Connection: For CarPlay/Android Auto, a faulty USB cable or port can cause disconnections and system instability.
  5. Phone Software Conflicts: Outdated phone software or app conflicts can also contribute to issues.

When to See a Shop:

  • Soon: If the problem is persistent, affects safety features (like rearview camera), or if basic troubleshooting doesn't help.
  • Immediately: If the screen goes completely blank and doesn't recover, or if other electrical issues arise.

Diagnostics & Potential Solutions:

  1. Check for Software Updates: The first step is always to check if there's a newer software version for your infotainment system. Dealerships can perform this update. Sometimes, these updates specifically address known bugs related to stability and smartphone integration.
  2. Hard Reset: While you've tried a soft reset, a dealership might perform a more comprehensive hard reset or system re-flash.
  3. Test with Different Devices/Cables: For CarPlay/Android Auto issues, try using a different, high-quality USB cable and a different smartphone to rule out your device or cable as the source of the problem.
  4. Inspect USB Ports: Ensure the USB ports are clean and free of debris.
  5. Diagnostic Scan: While infotainment issues don't always trigger OBD codes, the dealer can scan the body control module (BCM) and infotainment module for specific fault codes.
  6. Hardware Replacement: If software updates and resets don't resolve the issue, and after thorough diagnostics, the head unit or screen itself might need replacement. This is typically done under warranty if applicable.

It's a good idea to document the occurrences (date, time, what you were doing when it froze/blacked out) before taking it to the dealership. This information can help technicians diagnose the problem more effectively.
