Vehicle: 2020 GMC Acadia Denali

Hi everyone,

I'm having some frustrating issues with the infotainment system in my 2020 GMC Acadia Denali. It seems to freeze up randomly, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes completely locking up until I restart the car. Other times, it will just spontaneously reboot while I'm driving, which is really annoying when I'm using navigation or listening to music.

I've tried soft resets by holding down the power button, but the problem keeps coming back. Is this a common problem with the 2020 Acadia, or perhaps the IntelliLink system in general? I'm wondering if there's a known software bug or a hardware issue I should be looking into.

Any tips on troubleshooting this or if there's a specific update I should ask the dealer about would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches like freezing and random reboots are not uncommon across various vehicle manufacturers, and your 2020 GMC Acadia Denali's IntelliLink system can certainly experience them. These issues are often software-related but can sometimes stem from hardware or power supply problems.

Common Causes:

  1. Software Bugs: The most frequent cause is a bug in the system's operating software, which can lead to instability.
  2. Corrupted Data: Issues with connected devices (like phones) or corrupted data on USB drives can sometimes interfere with the system.
  3. Power Fluctuations: Minor power supply issues or a weak battery can sometimes cause erratic behavior.
  4. Hardware Failure: Less common, but a faulty head unit or related module can also be the culprit.

Steps for Resolution:

  1. Check for Software Updates: The first step is always to ensure your infotainment system has the latest software. Dealerships have access to updates that may not be available over-the-air. This often resolves many stability issues.
  2. Hard Reset: Disconnect the vehicle's battery for 15-30 minutes (negative terminal first, then positive) to perform a full system reset. Reconnect positive, then negative. This can clear temporary glitches.
  3. Remove External Devices: Disconnect all USB devices, unpair all Bluetooth phones, and remove any SD cards. Test the system to see if a specific device is causing interference.
  4. Check Fuses: While less likely for intermittent issues, a loose or corroded fuse related to the infotainment system could cause power interruptions. Refer to your owner's manual for the fuse box diagram.
  5. Diagnostic Scan: Although infotainment issues rarely trigger standard OBD-II powertrain codes, a dealership can perform a deeper diagnostic scan of the vehicle's various modules, including those for the infotainment system, to check for specific communication errors or fault codes (e.g., B-codes related to body control modules or communication issues).

When to See a Shop:

  • If software updates and basic troubleshooting steps (like hard resets and removing devices) do not resolve the problem.
  • If the issue is persistent and significantly impacts your ability to use essential features like navigation or hands-free calling.
  • If the dealer identifies a specific TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) related to infotainment stability for your model year.
  • While there are no specific OBD-II codes for infotainment freezing, persistent issues warrant a professional diagnosis, especially if under warranty.
