Vehicle: 2021 GMC Acadia Denali

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing some frustrating electrical issues with the infotainment system in my 2021 GMC Acadia Denali. The main screen will occasionally flicker, almost like it's losing power for a split second. This often coincides with Apple CarPlay disconnecting and reconnecting, or sometimes it just freezes entirely.

It's an intermittent problem, sometimes it happens multiple times on a short drive, other times it won't happen for days. I've tried restarting the system by holding down the power button, and it sometimes helps temporarily. I've also ensured my phone's software is up to date.

Has anyone else with a newer Acadia experienced these kinds of infotainment glitches? Could it be a software bug, or something more serious like a loose connection or a faulty module?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent infotainment issues like flickering screens and CarPlay disconnections in newer vehicles like your 2021 GMC Acadia Denali are quite common and can stem from several electrical or software-related causes.

Here are the most likely culprits and diagnostic steps:

  1. Software Glitch/Update: The first and often simplest solution is a software update for the infotainment system. Manufacturers frequently release updates to address bugs and improve stability. Check with your GMC dealer if there are any pending updates for your vehicle's system.
  2. Loose Connections: Vibrations over time can cause wiring harnesses behind the dash or at the infotainment control module to become slightly loose. This can lead to intermittent power loss or data communication issues. This is harder to diagnose without removing trim panels.
  3. Infotainment Control Module Failure: The module itself could be faulty. If it's intermittently failing, it would explain the flickering and disconnections. This might not always throw a check engine light but could store a 'U' code (e.g., U0140 - Lost Communication With Body Control Module, or U0164 - Lost Communication With HVAC Control Module, if related to a shared network) in the vehicle's diagnostic history.
  4. Power Supply Issues: Less common, but a fluctuating power supply to the infotainment module (due to a faulty fuse, relay, or wiring) could also cause these symptoms.
  5. USB Port/Cable Issues: If CarPlay issues are more prominent, try a different, high-quality USB cable. Sometimes, a worn cable or a faulty USB port can cause disconnections.

When to See a Shop: Since this is an intermittent issue and involves complex electronics, it's highly recommended to take your Acadia to a GMC dealership. They have specialized diagnostic equipment to check for stored trouble codes, perform software updates, and thoroughly test the infotainment control module and its wiring. Explain the exact symptoms and when they occur to help them diagnose it efficiently.
