Vehicle: 2020 GMC Acadia SLT

Hi all,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2020 GMC Acadia SLT's infotainment system. It seems like every other day, the screen just freezes up completely. I can't change radio stations, adjust volume, or even access Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Sometimes it eventually reboots itself after a few minutes, but other times I have to turn the car off and on again to get it working. It's really annoying, especially when I'm relying on navigation. I've tried disconnecting my phone, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Acadia or other GMC models? Is there a known fix or a software update I should be asking about?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Identify the Problem: Infotainment system freezing and unresponsiveness are common complaints across many modern vehicles, including the 2020 GMC Acadia. These issues are typically software-related, though hardware failures can sometimes contribute.

  2. Common Causes:

    • Software Glitches: Bugs in the infotainment system's operating software are the most frequent culprits. These can be triggered by specific apps, system overload, or simply unoptimized code.
    • Corrupted Data: Issues with cached data or temporary files can lead to system instability.
    • Connectivity Issues: Problems with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or USB connections (especially with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) can sometimes cause the system to hang.
    • Hardware Malfunction: Less common, but a failing head unit or related module could be the cause.
  3. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Soft Reset: Try holding down the power button on the infotainment system for about 10-15 seconds until it reboots. This is similar to restarting a computer.
    • Check for Updates: Ensure your vehicle's infotainment software is up to date. Dealers often have access to the latest firmware updates that can resolve known bugs.
    • Isolate the Cause: Note if the freezing occurs only when using a specific feature (e.g., navigation, a particular app, or Apple CarPlay/Android Auto). This can help narrow down the problem.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Persistent Issues: If soft resets don't help, or the problem recurs frequently, it's time to visit a GMC dealership.
    • Diagnostic Scan: A technician can perform a diagnostic scan to check for any fault codes related to the infotainment system or associated modules.
    • TSBs: Inquire if there are any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) specifically addressing infotainment stability for your 2020 Acadia. GM often releases updates to fix these types of issues. They may recommend a software reflash or, in rare cases, replacement of the head unit.
