Vehicle: 2016 GMC Canyon SLE

Hey guys,

I've got a weird issue with my 2016 GMC Canyon SLE. Lately, I've noticed that my headlights (both low and high beams) will flicker intermittently, especially when the truck is idling or at very low RPMs. It's not a complete blackout, more like a rapid dimming and brightening. It seems to stabilize a bit when I'm driving at higher speeds, but it's still noticeable.

I'm worried it might be an electrical problem. Could it be the alternator, or maybe a loose ground somewhere? I haven't seen any warning lights on the dash, but it's definitely unsettling. Any ideas on what I should check first on a 2016 Canyon?

Headlight flickering, especially at idle, on your 2016 GMC Canyon SLE is a classic symptom of an underlying electrical system instability. While it might seem minor, it's important to address it as it can indicate issues with your charging system or other critical components.

Here are the most common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Alternator Output: The alternator is crucial for maintaining stable voltage. If it's starting to fail, it might not produce consistent voltage at lower RPMs, leading to flickering lights. Have your alternator's output tested under load, paying close attention to its performance at idle.
  2. Battery Health: A weak or failing battery can put extra strain on the alternator, contributing to voltage fluctuations. Even if it starts the truck, a battery with reduced capacity might not properly stabilize the system voltage. Get your battery tested for overall health and CCA.
  3. Loose or Corroded Connections: Check the battery terminals (positive and negative) for corrosion and ensure they are tightly secured. Also, inspect the main ground cable from the battery to the chassis and engine block. A poor ground connection can cause widespread electrical issues.
  4. Belt Tension: A loose serpentine belt can cause the alternator to slip, leading to inconsistent charging. Ensure the belt is properly tensioned and free from cracks or wear.
  5. Body Control Module (BCM): In some cases, a faulty BCM can cause erratic electrical behavior, including headlight issues. However, this is typically less common than charging system problems.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked the battery terminals and main ground connections and the problem persists, it's advisable to take your Canyon to a qualified mechanic. They can perform comprehensive charging system tests, including ripple voltage tests on the alternator, and diagnose any deeper electrical issues that might not be immediately apparent. Addressing this promptly can prevent a complete charging system failure or damage to other electrical components.
