Vehicle: 2016 GMC Canyon SLE

Hi all,

I'm having some transmission issues with my 2016 GMC Canyon SLE, 3.6L V6, with around 70,000 miles. Lately, it's been shifting really hard, especially from 1st to 2nd gear, and sometimes there's a noticeable delay when I put it into drive or reverse from park.

The Check Engine Light came on, and my basic scanner pulled a P0700 code, which I know is a generic transmission control system malfunction code. It doesn't give much detail, unfortunately. I'm hoping it's something simple like low fluid or a sensor, not a full transmission rebuild. Any common issues with these transmissions?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0700 code indicates that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a fault in the transmission system and has illuminated the Check Engine Light. This code is a general informational code, meaning you'll need a more advanced scanner to pull the specific 'P' codes stored in the TCM.

Here are common issues that can lead to the symptoms you're describing:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid:

    • Diagnosis: Incorrect fluid levels or degraded fluid can significantly impact transmission performance, leading to hard shifts and delays. Overheating can also break down fluid quickly.
    • Action: Check your transmission fluid level according to your owner's manual (often with the engine warm and running in Park). Note the color and smell; burnt smell or dark color indicates contamination. If low, top it off with the correct type of fluid. If it's dark or smells burnt, a fluid and filter change might be necessary, but be aware that sometimes a fluid change on a failing transmission can exacerbate issues.
  2. Faulty Transmission Solenoids:

    • Diagnosis: Shift solenoids or the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid can fail, causing incorrect gear engagement, harsh shifts, or delayed responses. These are common failure points.
    • Action: A professional scan tool can test solenoid operation and identify which specific solenoid might be malfunctioning. Replacement of individual solenoids is often possible without a full transmission overhaul.
  3. Transmission Range Sensor (Neutral Safety Switch):

    • Diagnosis: A failing transmission range sensor can send incorrect signals to the TCM, leading to delayed engagement or incorrect gear selection. This can sometimes cause the P0700 code.
    • Action: This sensor's function can be checked with a diagnostic tool. If faulty, it needs to be replaced.
  4. Valve Body Issues:

    • Diagnosis: The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. Wear or debris in the valve body can cause pressure issues, leading to hard shifts and delays.
    • Action: This is a more complex repair, often requiring removal of the transmission pan or even the transmission itself for access. A professional diagnosis is crucial here.

When to See a Shop: Since your basic scanner only pulled P0700, you absolutely need to take your Canyon to a reputable transmission shop or a GMC dealership. They have specialized diagnostic equipment that can communicate directly with the TCM to retrieve the specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that are causing the P0700. These specific codes will pinpoint the exact component or system that is malfunctioning, allowing for a more accurate and cost-effective repair. Continuing to drive with significant transmission issues can lead to more severe and expensive damage.
