Vehicle: 2016 GMC Canyon SLT 4x4

I have a 2016 GMC Canyon SLT 4x4 with about 60,000 miles on it. I do a fair bit of off-roading and occasional towing, so I'm thinking it's time to change the front and rear differential fluids.

Is this a manageable DIY job for someone with moderate mechanical skills, or should I definitely take it to a shop? I'm looking to save some money if possible.

What type of fluid do I need for both the front and rear differentials, and are there any special considerations or procedures for the 4x4 system, like checking the transfer case fluid at the same time?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Changing differential fluid on your 2016 GMC Canyon SLT 4x4 is a very manageable DIY job for someone with moderate mechanical skills and the right tools. Given your mileage and usage (off-roading, towing), servicing these fluids is crucial for longevity.

  1. Why Change It: Differential fluid lubricates the gears that transfer power from the driveshaft to the wheels. Off-roading and towing put extra stress on these components, leading to fluid breakdown and contamination, which can cause premature wear.
  2. Recommended Interval: For normal use, GMC typically recommends differential fluid changes around 75,000-100,000 miles. However, for severe duty (towing, off-roading, frequent short trips), this interval should be shortened to 30,000-50,000 miles. At 60,000 miles with your usage, you're definitely due.
  3. Fluid Type:
    • Front and Rear Differentials: You will typically need a 75W-90 synthetic gear lubricant that meets API GL-5 specifications. Always double-check your owner's manual for the exact specification and capacity for both front and rear axles, as some models might have slight variations or require a specific friction modifier for limited-slip differentials (though most Canyons don't have this in the front).
    • Transfer Case: While you're at it, it's an excellent idea to check/change the transfer case fluid. Your 2016 Canyon will likely require AutoTrak II fluid for the transfer case, which is a specific blue-colored fluid. Do not use regular ATF.
  4. Tools and Supplies:
    • Socket wrench and appropriate sockets (often 1/2" or 3/8" square drive for drain/fill plugs).
    • Fluid pump (essential for filling differentials, as they are often difficult to access).
    • Drain pan.
    • New differential fluid and transfer case fluid.
    • Rags, gloves.
    • Torque wrench (for proper plug tightening).
  5. General Steps (Differentials):
    • Park on a level surface, engage parking brake, and safely lift the vehicle.
    • Locate the fill plug (usually higher) and drain plug (lower) on each differential.
    • Always remove the fill plug FIRST. This ensures you can refill it after draining. If you drain first and can't open the fill plug, you're stuck.
    • Place drain pan, remove drain plug, and allow fluid to drain completely.
    • Reinstall drain plug (with new washer if applicable) and torque to spec.
    • Pump new fluid into the fill hole until it just starts to seep out.
    • Reinstall fill plug and torque to spec.
  6. When to See a Shop:
    • If you encounter seized or stripped drain/fill plugs.
    • If the drained fluid contains large metallic chunks, which could indicate significant internal wear.
    • If you're uncomfortable working underneath the vehicle or lack the necessary tools, especially the fluid pump.
