Vehicle: 2022 GMC Canyon Denali

Hello forum,

I've got a concerning issue with my 2022 GMC Canyon Denali. The headlights, which are the factory LED units, have started flickering quite noticeably. It's not constant, but it happens randomly while driving, and sometimes they even go completely dark for a second or two before coming back on. It's pretty unnerving, especially at night.

I've checked the fuses, and they all seem fine. There are no warning lights on the dash related to the headlights. It seems to happen regardless of whether I'm on high beams or low beams. I'm worried about safety and getting pulled over.

Has anyone else with a newer Canyon experienced this? Could it be a loose connection, a bad relay, or something more serious with the headlight module itself?

Intermittent flickering and complete outages of your 2022 GMC Canyon Denali's LED headlights are a significant safety concern and indicate an electrical fault within the lighting system. Modern LED headlights are complex and often controlled by dedicated modules, making diagnosis a bit more involved than traditional halogen systems.

Here are the common steps and potential causes:

  1. Loose Connections/Corrosion: Even with newer vehicles, vibrations can loosen electrical connectors. Check the main harness connectors to the headlight assemblies and any visible ground points. Corrosion, though less likely on a 2022 model, can also cause intermittent contact. Ensure all connections are secure and clean.
  2. Faulty Headlight Assembly/LED Driver: Each LED headlight assembly contains an LED driver module that regulates power to the LEDs. If this driver is failing, it can cause flickering or complete outages. Sometimes, the entire assembly needs replacement if the driver is integrated.
  3. Body Control Module (BCM) Issues: The BCM controls many electrical functions, including exterior lighting. A fault within the BCM or its communication with the headlight modules could lead to erratic behavior. An OBD-II scan might reveal codes related to lighting circuits, such as B2580 (Headlamp Control Circuit Low) or other BCM communication errors.
  4. Relay Problems: While less common with modern LED systems that often use solid-state switching, a faulty relay (if present in the headlight circuit) could cause intermittent power delivery. Consult your owner's manual or a wiring diagram to identify if your Canyon uses headlight relays.
  5. Wiring Harness Damage: Though less common on a newer vehicle, physical damage to the wiring harness leading to the headlights (e.g., from an animal chewing, accident, or rubbing) could cause intermittent shorts or open circuits.

When to See a Shop: Given the safety implications of headlight failure, it's crucial to address this promptly. If you've checked basic connections and fuses without success, take your Canyon to a GMC dealership or a qualified automotive electrical specialist. They have the diagnostic tools to read specific BCM codes, test the headlight assemblies, and trace complex wiring issues that are often beyond a DIY fix for modern LED systems.
