Vehicle: 2023 GMC Canyon AT4

Hey folks,

I'm having a really strange problem with the headlights on my 2023 GMC Canyon AT4. Occasionally, they'll start flickering, almost like a strobe light, and sometimes they'll just turn off completely for a few seconds before coming back on. I've also noticed a "Check Headlight System" warning pop up on the dash when this happens.

It seems to be completely random, not tied to bumps or specific weather conditions. Both high and low beams are affected. This is a brand new truck, so I'm pretty concerned about an electrical issue like this. It's a major safety hazard, especially at night.

Has anyone else with a new Canyon experienced anything similar? What could be causing this? I'm hoping it's something simple and not a major wiring harness problem.

Headlight flickering and intermittent failure on a new vehicle like your 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 is definitely a serious concern and points directly to an electrical system issue. Given the 'Check Headlight System' warning, the vehicle's computer is detecting a fault.

Here are the most common causes for such symptoms:

  1. Headlight Control Module (HCM) Failure: Modern vehicles often use a dedicated module to control the headlights, especially LED or advanced lighting systems. A fault within this module can cause erratic behavior, including flickering or complete failure.
  2. Loose or Corroded Wiring/Connectors: Even on a new vehicle, a poorly seated connector or a pinched wire in the headlight circuit can lead to intermittent power loss. This could be at the headlight assembly itself, the main harness, or the connections to the HCM or BCM.
  3. Grounding Issues: A poor ground connection to the headlight circuit can cause voltage fluctuations, leading to flickering. This is a common cause of various electrical gremlins.
  4. Faulty Headlight Switch/Stalk: While less common for intermittent flickering, a failing headlight switch or multi-function stalk could send inconsistent signals to the HCM.
  5. Body Control Module (BCM) Issues: The BCM oversees many electrical functions, including lighting. A fault in the BCM could mismanage the headlight operation. This would likely store specific 'B' codes (e.g., B0001 - Driver Frontal Deployment Loop Stage 1 - Open, if related to a specific circuit, though more likely a lighting-specific code) in the system.

When to See a Shop: Given that your Canyon is a 2023 model, it should still be under warranty. This issue is a significant safety concern, and you should take it to a GMC dealership immediately. They have the specialized diagnostic tools to read specific 'B' (Body) codes related to the lighting system, perform thorough electrical tests, and identify whether the issue is with a module, wiring, or the headlight assembly itself. Do not delay, as driving with unreliable headlights is dangerous.
