Vehicle: 2017 GMC Canyon SLT

Hey everyone, I'm having some steering issues with my 2017 GMC Canyon SLT, which has around 80,000 miles. Lately, the steering feels really loose, and the truck tends to wander on the highway. I constantly have to make small corrections to keep it going straight. It feels like there's a lot of play in the steering wheel before the wheels actually respond.

I haven't hit any major potholes recently, and the tires are relatively new and properly inflated. What could be causing this? Is this a common problem for Canyons of this generation?

Loose steering and vehicle wandering on your 2017 GMC Canyon SLT are classic symptoms of wear in several key suspension and steering components. Given the mileage, it's quite possible that some parts are reaching the end of their service life. Here's a list of common culprits:

  1. Tie Rod Ends (Inner and Outer): These connect the steering rack to the steering knuckle. Worn tie rod ends will introduce play into the steering system, leading to a loose feel and wandering.
  2. Ball Joints (Upper and Lower): Similar to tie rod ends, worn ball joints in the control arms can cause excessive play in the suspension, affecting alignment and steering precision.
  3. Wheel Bearings: While often associated with a humming noise, severely worn wheel bearings can also contribute to a loose feeling in the steering and vehicle instability.
  4. Control Arm Bushings: Degraded rubber bushings in the control arms can allow too much movement, leading to alignment issues and wandering.
  5. Steering Rack or Steering Shaft: Less common, but wear within the steering rack itself or play in the steering shaft (e.g., universal joints) can also cause a loose feeling.
  6. Alignment: Even if components aren't worn, an incorrect wheel alignment can cause wandering, especially if toe settings are off.

When to See a Shop:

  • It is highly recommended to have your Canyon inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. Loose steering is a significant safety concern, as it compromises your ability to control the vehicle, especially at highway speeds or during emergency maneuvers.
  • A shop will be able to put the vehicle on a lift and perform a thorough inspection of all steering and suspension components, checking for play and wear. They can then accurately diagnose the issue and recommend the necessary repairs, which may include replacing worn parts and performing a wheel alignment.
