2018 Sierra 1500 P0420 Code - Catalytic Converter or O2 Sensor?

Hey everyone,

My 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT, with the 5.3L V8 engine, just threw a check engine light and when I scanned it, I got a P0420 code. The truck seems to be running perfectly fine – no noticeable loss of power, no strange smells, and no unusual exhaust noises. I'm a bit stumped.

Is this code an automatic death sentence for my catalytic converter, or could it be something simpler like an oxygen sensor acting up? I've heard sometimes exhaust leaks can also trigger this. What's the best way to diagnose this without just throwing parts at it?

Any advice from fellow Sierra owners would be greatly appreciated!

  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
