Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT with the 5.3L V8, and it's just crossed 75,000 miles. I've been noticing a slight shudder, especially when accelerating gently around 40-50 mph. I'm wondering if it's time to change the transmission fluid.

The owner's manual seems a bit vague on the exact interval for 'normal' driving conditions. Some forums suggest 60k, others 100k. What's the consensus here for these trucks? Is this shudder a sign of old fluid, or could it be something more serious like the torque converter?

I'm comfortable doing some DIY, but a transmission fluid change seems a bit more involved than an oil change. Any tips or specific fluid recommendations for this model year would be greatly appreciated!

Summary: For 2018 Sierra 1500 Transmission Fluid Change Interval & Shudder, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
