2018 Sierra 1500 Transmission Fluid Change - What type and interval?

Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT with the 5.3L V8 and about 75,000 miles on it. I'm wondering about the transmission fluid. The owner's manual seems a bit vague on the exact interval for 'normal' driving versus 'heavy duty' use. I do a fair bit of towing a small boat in the summer, but mostly highway driving otherwise.

Should I be looking at a full flush or just a drain and fill? And what specific fluid type should I be using? I want to make sure I'm using the right stuff to keep my transmission healthy for the long haul. Any advice or DIY guides would be great!

Summary: For 2018 Sierra 1500 Transmission Fluid Change - What type and interval?, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
