Vehicle: 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT

Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT, and lately, I've noticed a distinct clunking or sometimes a squeaking noise coming from the front end, especially when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It's more noticeable at lower speeds.

It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side, but it's hard to pinpoint exactly. The truck has about 85,000 miles on it. I haven't hit any major potholes recently, and the steering feels normal, no pulling or anything.

Has anyone experienced this with their Sierra? What should I be looking for? Could it be something simple, or am I looking at a bigger suspension repair?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking or squeaking noise from the front suspension of your 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 is a common complaint as vehicles age and components wear. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common culprit. The bushings or ball joints on the end links can wear out, causing a clunking sound, especially over small bumps or when turning. They are relatively inexpensive to replace.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings in your upper or lower control arms can degrade over time, leading to metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement, resulting in clunks or squeaks. This often requires replacing the entire control arm or pressing in new bushings.
  3. Ball Joints: Worn upper or lower ball joints can also cause clunking noises and can affect steering stability. A mechanic can check for play in these components.
  4. Shock Absorbers: While less common for a distinct clunk, a failing shock absorber could contribute to suspension noise, especially if it's leaking or has internal damage.
  5. Loose Components: Occasionally, a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a loose skid plate can mimic a suspension noise.

When to See a Shop:

It's highly recommended to have a professional mechanic inspect your suspension. They can safely lift the vehicle, inspect all components for wear, play, or damage, and accurately diagnose the source of the noise. Driving with worn suspension components can compromise handling, tire wear, and safety. Early diagnosis can prevent more expensive repairs down the line.
