Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT, and lately, the brakes have been making a terrible squealing noise, especially when I first apply them. It's gotten worse over the last few weeks, and now I'm hearing a grinding sound too, mostly from the front passenger side.

I haven't had any warning lights come on, and the truck still stops, but it feels a bit less responsive. I'm wondering if this is just typical wear and tear or something more serious. I do a lot of towing, so my brakes probably get a good workout.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? Should I try to inspect them myself or just take it straight to a shop? Thanks for any advice!

Summary: For Loud Squealing and Grinding from Brakes on my 2018 Sierra 1500, work through these steps on your 2015+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
