Vehicle: 2022 GMC Terrain SLE

Hi all, I'm driving a 2022 GMC Terrain SLE with about 30,000 miles on it. This morning, both the ABS light and the Traction Control light came on simultaneously on my dashboard. There wasn't any specific event that triggered it, like hitting a pothole or hard braking. The brakes seem to be working fine, no strange noises or pulsating pedal.

I've tried turning the car off and on a few times, but the lights remain illuminated. What could be causing this? Is it safe to drive with these lights on, or should I get it checked out immediately? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and Traction Control lights illuminate on your 2022 GMC Terrain SLE, it indicates that the vehicle's computer has detected a fault within these systems. While your brakes may feel normal, the ABS and traction control functions are likely disabled, which can impact safety, especially in emergency braking or slippery conditions. Here are the most common causes:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors: This is by far the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/Traction Control system loses crucial data, triggering the warning lights. A common diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for this would be something like C0035 (Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit) or similar for other wheels.
  2. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring harnesses leading to the wheel speed sensors or the ABS module can interrupt signals, causing the lights to come on.
  3. ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair but would typically be indicated by specific diagnostic codes.
  4. Brake Fluid Level: While less likely to trigger both lights without other symptoms, a very low brake fluid level can sometimes cause ABS warnings.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Action: While your brakes may feel normal, the safety features of ABS and Traction Control are compromised. It is generally advised to have this checked by a professional as soon as possible, especially if you anticipate driving in adverse weather or need to perform an emergency stop.
  • Diagnostics: The first step for a professional will be to connect a diagnostic scan tool to your Terrain's OBD-II port. This will retrieve any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the ABS and Traction Control systems. These codes will pinpoint the exact sensor or circuit that is faulty, guiding the repair process. Do not ignore these warning lights, as they indicate a potential safety system malfunction.
