Vehicle: 2022 GMC Yukon Denali

Hey everyone,

I'm having some trouble with the power liftgate on my 2022 GMC Yukon Denali, which is only about two years old. Lately, it's been acting up – sometimes it won't open all the way, other times it won't close completely, or it just stops halfway and beeps.

It's really inconsistent. I've tried using the button on the key fob, the button inside the cabin, and the button on the liftgate itself, but the problem persists across all methods. It's frustrating when I'm trying to load groceries or gear.

Is this a common issue with newer Yukons? Are there any known recalls or TSBs for this? Any advice on what might be causing it or how to fix it would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Understand the Problem: Intermittent power liftgate malfunctions on a relatively new vehicle like your 2022 GMC Yukon Denali can be frustrating. These systems are complex, relying on motors, sensors, and control modules, and issues can arise from various points.

  2. Common Causes:

    • Weak Liftgate Struts/Motors: Even on newer vehicles, a motor or strut could be faulty or weakening, especially if it's struggling to lift or lower the heavy gate smoothly.
    • Obstruction Detection: The system has sensors to detect obstructions. Sometimes, even a minor misalignment, dirt on the sensors, or a faulty sensor can trick the system into thinking there's an obstruction, causing it to stop or reverse.
    • Wiring or Connector Issues: Loose, corroded, or damaged wiring/connectors to the liftgate motor, sensors, or control module can cause intermittent operation.
    • Liftgate Control Module (LGCM) Glitch: The dedicated module that controls the liftgate can sometimes experience software glitches or internal failures.
    • Low Battery Voltage: While less common for intermittent issues, a weak 12V battery can sometimes affect auxiliary systems like the power liftgate.
  3. Diagnostic Steps:

    • Check for Obstructions: Visually inspect the liftgate's path for anything that might be blocking it, even small debris.
    • Manual Operation: Try to operate the liftgate manually (if your model allows) to feel for any binding or resistance.
    • Reset Procedure: Some vehicles have a liftgate reset procedure (often involving manually opening/closing it a few times or disconnecting the battery for a short period). Consult your owner's manual.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Under Warranty: Since your Yukon is a 2022 model, it's likely still under factory warranty. This is the best course of action. A GMC dealership can perform a diagnostic scan to check for specific fault codes related to the liftgate system.
    • TSBs/Recalls: Inquire with the dealer if there are any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or recalls specifically addressing power liftgate issues for your model year. They will have the most up-to-date information and solutions.
