Vehicle: 2022 GMC Yukon AT4

Hi all, I'm getting the dreaded 'Service Trailer Brake System' message on the dash of my 2022 GMC Yukon AT4. It popped up while I was towing my boat trailer last weekend, and now it's on almost constantly, even when I'm not towing.

When I try to use the integrated trailer brake controller, it just says 'No Trailer Connected' or 'Service Trailer Brake System'. The trailer lights work fine, but I'm concerned about the brakes.

Has anyone else with a newer Yukon experienced this? What could be causing it, and is there a common fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer: The 'Service Trailer Brake System' message on your 2022 GMC Yukon AT4, especially when it appears without a trailer connected, often points to an issue with the integrated trailer brake control (ITBC) module or its associated wiring. This is a critical safety system, so it needs prompt attention.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Faulty ITBC Module: The module itself can fail internally, leading to communication errors or incorrect readings.
    • Wiring/Connector Issues: Corrosion, damage, or loose connections in the wiring harness leading to the ITBC module or the trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle. This is particularly common in areas exposed to road salt or moisture.
    • Trailer Connector Pin Damage: Inspect the 7-pin trailer connector at the rear of your Yukon for bent, corroded, or pushed-in pins. Even a single damaged pin can disrupt communication.
    • Grounding Issues: Poor ground connections for the trailer wiring or the ITBC module can cause intermittent faults.
    • Brake Switch/Sensor: While less common for this specific message without a trailer, a faulty brake pedal position sensor could theoretically contribute.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps (DIY):

    • Visual Inspection: Carefully inspect the 7-pin trailer connector on your Yukon for any signs of damage or corrosion. Clean it with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
    • Check Fuses: Consult your owner's manual for the location of fuses related to the trailer brake system and check them for continuity.
    • Restart Vehicle: Sometimes a simple ignition cycle (turning the vehicle off, waiting a few minutes, then restarting) can clear a temporary electronic glitch.
  3. When to See a Shop: Given that this is a safety system, and the message persists even without a trailer, it's highly recommended to have your Yukon inspected by a GMC dealership or a qualified mechanic. They have specialized diagnostic tools (like GM's GDS2) that can communicate directly with the ITBC module, read specific fault codes (often U-codes or C-codes not visible with generic OBD-II scanners), and pinpoint the exact component causing the malfunction. Driving without functional trailer brakes is extremely hazardous.
