2017 HR-V Power Window Intermittent Failure - Driver's Side

Vehicle: 2017 Honda HR-V LX

My 2017 Honda HR-V's driver's side power window has started acting up. Sometimes it works perfectly, but other times it won't go down or up at all. It's completely intermittent.

When it does fail, I don't hear any motor noise, and the passenger side window works fine from its own switch and the master switch. It's just the driver's side that's giving me trouble.

Could this be the window motor itself, the switch, or perhaps a wiring issue in the door jamb? I'm hesitant to start pulling the door panel off without a better idea of what to look for.

Intermittent power window issues like the one you're experiencing with your 2017 Honda HR-V's driver's side window are frustrating but often point to a few common culprits. The fact that you hear no motor noise when it fails, and the passenger window works, helps narrow down the possibilities.

Common Causes & Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Driver's Side Window Switch (Most Common): The master power window switch on the driver's door is a very common failure point. Over time, contacts inside the switch can wear out or become corroded, leading to intermittent operation. Since the passenger window works from the master switch, this suggests the primary power supply to the master switch is fine, but the specific circuit for the driver's window within the switch could be failing.

    • Test: If you know someone with a similar HR-V, you could try swapping the master switch temporarily (though this is often not practical). A professional can test the switch's continuity.
  2. Window Motor: While possible, if you hear no motor noise at all, it's less likely to be the motor itself unless the motor's internal power supply or control circuit is failing. Motors typically make some noise, even if struggling. However, an intermittent motor could certainly cause this.

  3. Wiring in the Door Jamb: The wiring harness that passes between the door and the body is subjected to constant flexing every time the door opens and closes. Over years, wires can fray, break, or short intermittently. This is a very plausible cause for intermittent operation with no motor noise.

    • Test: Carefully inspect the rubber boot containing the wires in the door jamb for any visible damage, pinching, or exposed wires.
  4. Blown Fuse: Although less likely for an intermittent issue, a partially blown or loose fuse could cause this. Check the fuse box diagram for the power window fuse and ensure it's fully seated and intact.

When to See a Shop: If you're not comfortable removing the door panel to inspect the wiring and test components with a multimeter, or if you've done a basic inspection without finding a clear fault, it's best to take your HR-V to a qualified mechanic. They have the necessary tools and diagnostic experience to:

  • Accurately test the power window switch for proper function.
  • Check for power and ground at the window motor to determine if the motor itself is faulty or if it's not receiving power.
  • Trace wiring issues within the door or door jamb, which can be tricky to pinpoint without experience.
