2019 HR-V ABS and VSA Lights On - What does this mean?

Vehicle: 2019 Honda HR-V EX

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2019 Honda HR-V EX. Both the ABS warning light and the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) warning light came on simultaneously on my dash. There's no Check Engine Light, just these two.

The car seems to be driving fine, and I haven't noticed any changes in braking performance, but I'm concerned about driving without these safety features. I haven't hit any potholes recently or done anything unusual.

What could cause both of these lights to come on at the same time? Is this a common problem for HR-Vs? I'm wondering if it's a sensor issue or something more serious. Any insights would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2019 Honda HR-V, it indicates a fault within the vehicle's braking or stability control system. These systems are interconnected, so an issue with one often affects the other.

Here's a breakdown of common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors (ABS Sensors):
    • This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a speed sensor that monitors its rotation. If one sensor fails, gets dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/VSA system can't accurately determine wheel speeds, leading to a fault.
    • A faulty sensor will often trigger specific ABS codes (e.g., C0031-C0034 for wheel speed sensor issues).
  2. ABS Module Failure:
    • The ABS control module (or ABS pump/modulator) can sometimes fail. This is a more expensive repair. Internal failures or issues with the module's electrical connections can trigger the lights.
  3. Brake Fluid Level/Pressure Sensor:
    • While less common for both lights, a low brake fluid level or a faulty brake pressure sensor could potentially cause issues with the braking system that impacts VSA.
  4. Steering Angle Sensor:
    • The VSA system relies on the steering angle sensor to know the driver's intended direction. A fault here can cause VSA to disable.
  5. Wiring Issues:
    • Damaged wiring or poor connections to any of the associated sensors or the ABS module can also trigger these warning lights.
  6. Low Battery Voltage (Less Common for this specific combo):
    • Sometimes, an extremely low battery can cause various warning lights to appear, but usually, other symptoms like slow cranking would be present.

What to Do and When to See a Shop:

  • Scan for Codes: While there's no Check Engine Light, a specialized OBD-II scanner (or one with ABS/SRS capabilities) can read specific ABS/VSA fault codes. These codes are crucial for pinpointing the exact issue.
  • Visual Inspection: Check around each wheel for any visible damage to the ABS sensor wires. Look for signs of rodent damage or physical impact.
  • Safety: While your regular braking might feel normal, the ABS and VSA systems are crucial safety features that prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking and help maintain control during skids. Driving without them means your vehicle won't have these assists in an emergency.
  • Professional Diagnosis Recommended: Due to the critical safety function of these systems, it's highly recommended to have your HR-V inspected by a professional mechanic or Honda dealership. They have the advanced diagnostic tools to read the specific ABS/VSA codes, test the wheel speed sensors, and diagnose the ABS module accurately. Addressing this promptly ensures your vehicle's safety features are fully functional.
