Vehicle: 2021 Honda HR-V EX

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2021 Honda HR-V EX. Both the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) warning light and the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) warning light came on simultaneously on my dashboard yesterday. There's no noticeable change in braking feel or driving dynamics, but having both lights on is concerning.

The car has about 40,000 miles on it. I haven't hit any major potholes recently, and the brake fluid level looks fine. I'm wondering if this is a common issue for the HR-V or if it points to a specific sensor failure.

Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I be looking for, or what are the typical causes for both these lights to illuminate at the same time?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the VSA and ABS warning lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2021 Honda HR-V, it's a strong indicator of an issue within the wheel speed sensor system or a related component. These systems are interconnected, as VSA relies heavily on the data provided by the ABS wheel speed sensors to function correctly.

  1. Interconnected Systems: The VSA system uses the ABS wheel speed sensors to detect wheel slip and apply individual brakes or reduce engine power to help maintain stability. If the ABS system has a fault, the VSA system will also be disabled and its light will come on.
  2. Common Causes for Both Lights:
    • Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most common culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one fails (due to dirt, damage, or internal electrical fault), the ABS and VSA systems lose critical data.
    • Damaged Wiring/Connector: The wiring harness or connector leading to a wheel speed sensor can become damaged, corroded, or disconnected.
    • ABS Modulator/Control Unit: Less common, but a fault within the ABS modulator or its integrated control unit can cause both lights.
    • Low Brake Fluid (Less Likely if Checked): While you mentioned checking it, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger ABS/VSA lights, but usually, it's accompanied by a brake system warning light.
  3. Diagnostic Steps:
    • Scan for Codes: Even if the check engine light isn't on, an advanced OBD-II scanner (or a Honda-specific scanner) can read ABS/VSA system codes. These codes (e.g., C1xxx series) will pinpoint which wheel speed sensor or other component is faulty.
    • Visual Inspection: Inspect each wheel speed sensor and its wiring for any obvious signs of damage, dirt, or loose connections. This often requires removing the wheel.

When to See a Shop:

  • Promptly: While your brakes may still function normally (without ABS), the VSA system is crucial for stability, especially in adverse conditions.
  • If you cannot read ABS/VSA specific codes with your scanner.
  • If a visual inspection doesn't reveal an obvious issue. A professional shop can accurately diagnose the specific sensor or component failure, perform resistance checks, and replace the faulty part. They can also check for any related service bulletins for your HR-V model.
