Vehicle: 2021 Honda HR-V Sport

I'm having an intermittent problem with my 2021 Honda HR-V Sport where I get a "Key Fob Not Detected" message, and the push-button start won't work. This happens even when the key fob is right in my pocket or in the cup holder.

I've replaced the key fob battery, and it helps for a bit, but then the issue comes back. Sometimes I have to press the start button with the fob itself to get it to recognize. Is there a sensor in the car that might be failing, or is this a common issue with the smart entry system?

It's really inconvenient when I'm in a hurry and the car won't start immediately.

An intermittent "Key Fob Not Detected" message in your 2021 Honda HR-V Sport can be frustrating, especially with a push-button start system. This issue typically points to a communication problem between your key fob and the vehicle's smart entry/start system.

1. Key Fob Battery:

  • Even if you've replaced the battery, ensure it's a fresh, high-quality battery (CR2032 is common for Honda fobs). Sometimes, new batteries can be weak or counterfeit. Also, ensure it's inserted correctly.

2. Radio Frequency Interference:

  • Other electronic devices in your car (e.g., dash cams, phone chargers, radar detectors, even certain cell phones) can sometimes interfere with the key fob's signal. Try removing or turning off other devices temporarily to see if the problem resolves.
  • External environmental factors (e.g., strong radio signals near cell towers or power lines) can also cause temporary interference.

3. Vehicle's Receiver Antenna:

  • Your car has several antennas that pick up the key fob's signal. If one of these antennas (e.g., in the center console, trunk, or near the ignition) is faulty, disconnected, or obstructed, it can cause intermittent detection issues. This is less common but possible.

4. Smart Entry/Start System Module:

  • The module responsible for processing the key fob's signal could be malfunctioning. This would require professional diagnosis.

5. Key Fob Itself:

  • While you replaced the battery, the fob itself could be faulty (e.g., internal circuit board damage). If you have a second fob, try using it exclusively for a few days to see if the problem persists.

When to See a Shop:

  • If replacing the battery with a known good one, checking for interference, and trying a second fob (if available) doesn't resolve the issue, it's time to visit a Honda dealership. They can use their diagnostic tools to check the signal strength from your fob, test the vehicle's receiver antennas, and look for any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the smart entry system. They can also reprogram the key fob or replace faulty components if necessary.
