Vehicle: 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid EX-L

Hello Honda community,

I'm having some concerning issues with my 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid. Recently, I've noticed very harsh shifts, especially when accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds. It feels like the car is lurching. On top of that, a transmission warning light has appeared on my dashboard.

I haven't scanned for codes yet, but I'm wondering if anyone else with a newer Accord Hybrid has experienced something similar. Is this a known issue with the CVT or eCVT system in these models? The car only has about 35,000 miles on it.

Any insights or advice on what this could be would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealer.

Harsh shifting and a transmission warning light on your 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid are definitely symptoms that warrant immediate attention. While the Accord Hybrid uses an eCVT (electronic Continuously Variable Transmission) system, which operates differently from a traditional CVT, issues can still arise. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): This is your first and most crucial step. A transmission warning light almost certainly means there are stored codes (likely P07xx series or manufacturer-specific codes) that will point directly to the problem area. Without these codes, diagnosis is largely guesswork.
  2. Potential Causes for eCVT/Transmission Issues:
    • Transmission Fluid Level/Quality: Although less common on newer vehicles with low mileage, incorrect fluid levels or contaminated fluid can cause shifting issues. Honda's eCVT uses specific fluid.
    • Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Issues: Software glitches or hardware failures in these control units can lead to incorrect shift logic.
    • Internal eCVT Component Failure: While designed for durability, internal components like clutches, sensors, or motor/generator units within the eCVT can fail.
    • Sensor Malfunctions: Speed sensors, temperature sensors, or pressure sensors within the transmission can send incorrect data, leading to erratic behavior.
  3. What to Do Immediately:
    • Avoid Driving Extensively: If the transmission warning light is on and you're experiencing harsh shifts, continued driving could potentially worsen the problem or cause more severe damage.
    • Check Fluid (If Accessible/Knowledgeable): Consult your owner's manual for the correct procedure to check the eCVT fluid level, if applicable. Be aware that many modern transmissions are sealed units.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately. Given that your vehicle is a 2022 model with only 35,000 miles, it is almost certainly still under the factory powertrain warranty. Do not attempt extensive DIY repairs, as this could void your warranty.
  • Take it to a Honda dealership. They have the specialized diagnostic tools and training for the eCVT system and can accurately diagnose and repair the issue under warranty. Provide them with a detailed description of the symptoms and when they occur.
