2022 Pilot EX-L - Driver Side Power Door Lock Intermittent Failure

Vehicle: 2022 Honda Pilot EX-L

I'm having a weird issue with my 2022 Honda Pilot EX-L. The driver's side power door lock is acting up. Sometimes it works perfectly with the key fob and the interior switch, but other times it just won't unlock or lock. It seems completely random. All other doors work fine, no issues there.

I've tried replacing the key fob battery, but that didn't help. It's really annoying when I have to manually unlock the door with the physical key, especially when it's raining. Has anyone experienced this with their Pilot? Could it be the actuator, or maybe a wiring issue in the door jamb? No check engine lights or anything, just this door lock problem.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent power door lock issues on a specific door, like your 2022 Honda Pilot EX-L's driver's side, are quite common and usually point to an electrical or mechanical fault within that door.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Faulty Door Lock Actuator: This is the most frequent culprit. The actuator is an electric motor that locks and unlocks the door. Over time, the internal gears or motor can wear out, leading to intermittent or complete failure.
    • Wiring Harness Damage: The wiring harness that runs from the body of the car into the door through the rubber boot can become fatigued, frayed, or broken over time due to repeated opening and closing of the door. This can cause intermittent power supply or signal issues to the actuator.
    • Door Lock Switch: Less likely if it's only the driver's door and the fob also fails, but a faulty master switch on the driver's door could be a factor. However, since the fob also fails, it points more towards the actuator or wiring.
    • Body Control Module (BCM): While possible, a BCM issue would typically affect multiple doors or other electrical functions, not just one specific door lock.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Listen for the Actuator: When you try to lock/unlock the door, listen closely. Do you hear any clicking, buzzing, or faint whirring sounds from inside the door that indicate the actuator is trying to work, even if the lock doesn't move? This can help confirm if it's receiving power.
    • Inspect Wiring (Door Jamb): Open the driver's door and carefully inspect the rubber boot between the door and the body. Gently pull it back if possible and look for any visible signs of cracked, pinched, or broken wires.
    • Check for DTCs: Although there's no check engine light, some advanced scan tools can read codes from the body control module (BCM) or door modules that might indicate an electrical fault with the door lock circuit.

When to See a Shop: If you confirm the issue is isolated to the driver's door and you're not comfortable removing the door panel to inspect or replace the actuator/wiring, it's best to take your Pilot to a dealership or an independent mechanic. Diagnosing and replacing a door lock actuator typically involves removing the interior door panel, which can be tricky without the right tools and knowledge to avoid damaging trim clips. A professional can quickly test the power and ground at the actuator and replace the faulty component efficiently.
