Vehicle: 2022 Honda Pilot Black Edition

Hello fellow Honda owners,

I'm experiencing a frustrating issue with my 2022 Honda Pilot Black Edition, which has about 30,000 miles on it. Recently, I've been getting intermittent warnings on the dashboard for 'LKAS System Failure' and 'ACC System Failure'. Sometimes, the entire Honda Sensing suite seems to disable itself.

It usually happens randomly, sometimes after starting the car, other times while driving on the highway. There's no check engine light on, and my basic OBD-II scanner doesn't show any codes related to these systems. The warnings usually clear after turning the car off and on again, but they always come back.

Has anyone with a newer Pilot or other Honda model experienced these Honda Sensing system failures? What was the underlying cause? Could it be a faulty sensor, a software glitch, or something else entirely? I'm planning to take it to the dealer, but any insights beforehand would be great.

The intermittent 'LKAS System Failure' and 'ACC System Failure' warnings on your 2022 Honda Pilot indicate an issue within the Honda Sensing suite, which relies on multiple sensors and cameras. While a basic OBD-II scanner might not show codes, these advanced systems often store specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) accessible only with a dealership-level scan tool.

Here are common causes for these types of failures:

  1. Blocked Sensors/Camera: The front radar sensor (located behind the lower grille) or the windshield-mounted camera (behind the rearview mirror) could be obstructed by dirt, ice, snow, or even a bug. A dirty windshield can also interfere with the camera.
  2. Misalignment/Damage: Even a minor bump or windshield replacement can cause the radar unit or camera to become misaligned, requiring recalibration. Damage to the sensor itself is also possible.
  3. Electrical Issues: Loose connections, damaged wiring, or a faulty sensor module can interrupt communication within the Honda Sensing system.
  4. Software Glitch: Less commonly, a software bug or corrupted data within the control module can cause intermittent errors.
  5. Low Battery Voltage: While less likely to cause specific system failures without other symptoms, low battery voltage can sometimes trigger various electronic warnings.

What to do:

  • Step 1: Check for Obstructions: Ensure the front of your vehicle, especially around the lower grille where the radar unit is, is clean and free of debris. Also, thoroughly clean your windshield, particularly the area in front of the camera module behind the rearview mirror.
  • Step 2: Inspect for Damage: Visually inspect the front bumper area for any signs of impact or damage that might have affected the radar sensor housing.
  • Step 3: Reset (Temporary): While not a fix, turning the car off and on again can sometimes temporarily clear the error, confirming it's an intermittent issue.

When to see a shop:

Since these are critical safety systems and the issue is persistent, it's imperative to take your 2022 Honda Pilot to a Honda dealership. They have the proprietary diagnostic equipment (like the Honda HDS or i-HDS) to:

  • Read specific Honda Sensing DTCs, which will pinpoint the exact sensor or module causing the fault.
  • Perform sensor and camera recalibrations, which are often required after certain repairs or if misalignment is detected.
  • Check for any applicable software updates for the Honda Sensing control modules. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair these systems yourself, as incorrect calibration or repair can compromise their safety functionality.
