ABS and Traction Control Lights On in My 2023 Pilot

Vehicle: 2023 Honda Pilot Elite

I have a 2023 Honda Pilot Elite, and suddenly both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control System (TCS) light came on yesterday. They've stayed on ever since. There wasn't any specific event that triggered them, no hard braking or anything.

The brakes feel normal, but I'm worried about driving with these lights on. What could be causing both of them to illuminate at the same time in such a new vehicle?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Common Causes:
    • Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: This is the most common culprit. The ABS and TCS systems rely heavily on accurate wheel speed data. If one sensor fails (due to damage, corrosion, or wiring issues), both lights will often illuminate.
    • ABS Module Failure: Less common in newer vehicles, but the ABS control module itself can fail.
    • Low Brake Fluid: Extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger brake-related warning lights, though usually the primary brake warning light comes on first.
    • Damaged ABS Wiring: Rodent damage or physical damage to the wiring harness leading to a wheel speed sensor or the ABS module.
    • Steering Angle Sensor Issue: The TCS system also uses the steering angle sensor. A fault here can sometimes trigger both lights.
  2. What to Check:
    • Visually inspect the wiring around each wheel for any obvious damage.
    • Check your brake fluid level.
  3. When to See a Shop:
    • When ABS and TCS lights are illuminated, it means these crucial safety systems are disabled. While your regular brakes might still work, you won't have anti-lock braking or traction control, which can be dangerous in emergency braking or slippery conditions.
    • It's imperative to have a professional diagnose this immediately. A shop can connect an advanced OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS-specific codes (not just generic engine codes) to pinpoint the exact sensor or module that is faulty.
  4. Diagnostics: This issue will trigger specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the ABS/TCS system. Common codes include:
    • C0031-C0035: Faulty wheel speed sensor (front left, front right, rear left, rear right).
    • C0040: ABS pump motor control circuit.
    • C0051: Steering angle sensor fault. These codes will help a technician quickly identify the problem area.
