Vehicle: 2018 Honda Civic EX-T

My 2018 Honda Civic EX-T with about 70,000 miles has started to feel a bit off when accelerating from a stop. It's not a huge jerk, but more like a slight shudder. I've heard that Honda CVTs can be particular about fluid changes.

I bought the car used a year ago and I'm not sure when the transmission fluid was last changed. The maintenance minder hasn't popped up for it yet, but I'm wondering if I should do it proactively. What's the recommended interval for the CVT fluid on these models? And could this shudder be related to old fluid?

It's a good idea to be proactive with CVT fluid changes, especially if you're experiencing a shudder. Honda recommends changing the CVT fluid every 30,000 miles or so, or when the Maintenance Minder code '3' appears. Given your vehicle's mileage and the fact you bought it used, a fluid change is definitely warranted.

Causes for shuddering in a Honda CVT can include:

  1. Old or degraded CVT fluid: This is the most common cause. Over time, the fluid loses its lubricating and friction-modifying properties, leading to improper belt-pulley engagement.
  2. Low fluid level: An insufficient amount of fluid can also cause issues.
  3. Torque converter issues: Less common, but a failing torque converter can cause shuddering.
  4. Clutch pack wear: In some CVTs, wear in the launch clutch can lead to similar symptoms.

When to see a shop:

  • If the shuddering persists after a proper CVT fluid change using genuine Honda HCF-2 fluid.
  • If you notice any other unusual noises, slipping, or a complete loss of power.
  • If you're not comfortable performing the fluid change yourself, as it requires specific procedures to ensure proper filling and temperature checks. A professional can also inspect for other potential issues.
