2020 Civic Si - Infotainment screen blackouts and freezing issues

Vehicle: 2020 Honda Civic Si

My 2020 Honda Civic Si's infotainment system has been acting up lately. The screen will randomly go black for a few seconds, then come back on, or sometimes it freezes completely and becomes unresponsive. This happens with Apple CarPlay and regular radio.

I've tried restarting the car, and sometimes that helps, but it's not a permanent fix. Is this a known issue with these models? Could it be a software glitch or something more serious with the head unit itself? It's really annoying, especially when using navigation.

I'm hoping there's a simple reset or update I can do before having to take it in.

Intermittent infotainment issues like blackouts and freezing are frustrating and can stem from several sources. This is a relatively common complaint across various modern vehicles.

1. Software Reset/Update:

  • Soft Reset: Try holding down the audio system's power button for about 10-15 seconds until the system reboots. This is similar to restarting a computer.
  • Check for Updates: Visit a Honda dealership or check the Honda owner's website (if applicable for your model) for any available software updates for your infotainment system. Updates often address bugs and improve stability.

2. Check Connections:

  • While less common for intermittent issues, a loose connection at the back of the head unit or within the wiring harness could cause this. This usually requires professional inspection.

3. External Device Interference:

  • If the issue primarily occurs with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, try different USB cables (ensure they are high-quality data cables) or test with a different phone to rule out your device or cable as the cause.

4. Potential Hardware Failure:

  • If software resets and updates don't resolve the issue, the head unit itself might be failing. This could be due to internal component issues or overheating.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the problem persists after attempting software resets and checking for updates, it's best to have a Honda dealership diagnose the issue. They can run specific diagnostics, check for relevant technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to your model year, and determine if the head unit needs repair or replacement. They can also check for any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the infotainment system, though these are less common for intermittent screen issues.
