Vehicle: 2021 Honda Civic Si

My 2021 Honda Civic Si, which I bought new, seems to be consuming a lot of oil. I've only put about 30,000 miles on it, and I find myself adding a quart of oil every 2,000-3,000 miles. There are no visible leaks, and no smoke from the exhaust.

I'm following the maintenance schedule, using the recommended oil, and driving normally. This seems excessive for a relatively new car. Is this normal for the 1.5T engine in the Si, or should I be concerned? What could be causing this, and what should I do?

Excessive oil consumption in the 1.5T engine, while not universally present, has been a known concern for some Honda owners, including those with the Civic Si. A quart every 2,000-3,000 miles is generally considered higher than normal for a modern engine without visible leaks or smoke. Here are potential causes:

  1. PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) System: A faulty or clogged PCV valve can lead to excessive crankcase pressure, forcing oil past piston rings or valve seals. This is a relatively inexpensive fix.
  2. Piston Rings: In some cases, issues with piston ring design or installation can lead to oil bypassing the rings and being burned in the combustion chamber. This is a more significant engine repair.
  3. Turbocharger Seals: The turbocharger uses engine oil for lubrication and cooling. If the seals within the turbocharger fail, oil can leak into either the intake or exhaust side and be burned off without visible external leaks.
  4. Valve Stem Seals: Worn or hardened valve stem seals can allow oil to seep into the combustion chamber, especially when the engine is cold or during deceleration.
  5. Oil Dilution (Less likely for consumption, but related): While not directly causing consumption, the 1.5T engine has had issues with fuel diluting the oil, which can make it appear as if oil levels are dropping faster than actual consumption. However, your description points more towards burning oil.

When to See a Shop: Given your vehicle is a 2021 model, it should still be under the powertrain warranty (5 years/60,000 miles). This is critical. You should:

  • Start an Oil Consumption Test: Contact your Honda dealership. They can perform a formal oil consumption test, which involves draining the oil, refilling it to a precise level, sealing the dipstick, and having you return after a set mileage (e.g., 1,000 miles) to measure consumption. This is the official way to document the issue for warranty claims.
  • Check for PCV Valve Issues: This is a good first step for the technician.
  • Inspect Turbocharger: They will check for signs of oil in the intake or exhaust system related to the turbo.

Do not delay in getting this documented, especially while under warranty, as engine repairs related to oil consumption can be costly.
