Vehicle: 2018 Honda Civic EX-T

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a really annoying issue with my 2018 Honda Civic EX-T lately. When I apply the brakes, especially at highway speeds, the pedal pulsates quite a bit, and I can feel a vibration through the steering wheel. It's not constant, but it's definitely getting worse.

I had the brakes checked about a year ago, and they said everything was fine. The car has about 65,000 miles on it now. Could this be warped rotors, or something else entirely? I'm worried about safety.

Any advice on what might be causing this and what I should look into first would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The symptoms you're describing—a pulsating brake pedal and steering wheel vibration during braking—are classic indicators of an issue within your braking system, most commonly warped brake rotors. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

  1. Diagnose Warped Rotors:

    • Cause: Rotors can warp due to excessive heat, improper installation, or uneven wear. When warped, the rotor surface isn't perfectly flat, causing the brake pads to grab unevenly, leading to pulsation.
    • Action: A mechanic will measure the rotor run-out (how much it deviates from flat) to confirm if they are warped beyond specification. Often, they can be resurfaced (turned) if there's enough material left, or they'll need replacement.
  2. Inspect Brake Pads and Calipers:

    • Cause: Worn or unevenly worn brake pads can contribute to vibration. Sticking calipers, which prevent the pads from releasing properly, can also cause excessive heat and rotor warping.
    • Action: Check pad thickness and ensure even wear. Calipers should be inspected for proper movement and any signs of leaks or seizing.
  3. Check Wheel Bearings:

    • Cause: While less common for direct pulsation, a failing wheel bearing can introduce play and vibration that might be exacerbated during braking.
    • Action: A mechanic can check for play in the wheel bearing by jacking up the car and wiggling the wheel.

When to See a Shop: Given that braking is a critical safety system, you should have your 2018 Honda Civic inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. They have the specialized tools to accurately measure rotor run-out, inspect caliper function, and diagnose any underlying issues. Driving with compromised brakes can lead to reduced stopping power and increased stopping distances, posing a significant safety risk.
