Vehicle: 2017 Honda CR-V EX-L

Hey everyone, I've got a 2017 Honda CR-V EX-L with about 75,000 miles on it. I'm wondering about the transmission fluid change interval. The owner's manual says one thing, but I've heard different opinions online, especially for Hondas.

Lately, I've noticed a very slight shudder when accelerating gently, particularly between 30-40 mph. It's not constant, but it's enough to make me think about the transmission. Could this be related to old fluid?

I've kept up with all other maintenance, but this is the first time I'm thinking about the transmission fluid. Is this something I can DIY, or should I take it to a shop? Any advice on the best type of fluid to use would be great too!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The shudder you're experiencing in your 2017 Honda CR-V EX-L at 75,000 miles could indeed be related to aging transmission fluid. Honda's automatic transmissions, especially the CVTs and earlier automatics, are quite sensitive to fluid condition.

When to Change Transmission Fluid:

  1. Honda's Maintenance Minder: Honda's Maintenance Minder system often recommends a transmission fluid change around 60,000-90,000 miles under normal driving conditions, or sooner for severe use (e.g., heavy towing, mountainous driving, frequent short trips in extreme temperatures). Look for the '3' sub-code.
  2. General Guideline: For a vehicle with 75,000 miles, a transmission fluid change is definitely a good idea, especially if it hasn't been done before. It's considered preventative maintenance to extend the life of your transmission.

Causes of Shudder:

  • Degraded Fluid: Over time, transmission fluid breaks down, losing its lubricating and friction-modifying properties. This can lead to increased wear and shuddering as the clutch packs or torque converter struggle to engage smoothly.
  • Contamination: Metal particles or sludge can accumulate in the fluid, affecting valve body operation and overall transmission performance.

DIY vs. Shop:

  • DIY: A drain and fill is generally a straightforward DIY task for many Honda models, similar to an oil change. You'll need the correct Honda OEM fluid (Honda DW-1 for conventional automatics or HCF-2 for CVTs, depending on your specific CR-V's transmission type – check your owner's manual carefully), a drain pan, and a wrench. Never use generic or non-Honda specified fluid, as this can cause severe transmission damage.
  • Shop: If you're uncomfortable with the process, or if you suspect a more serious issue, a professional shop is recommended. They can perform a proper drain and fill, and also check for other potential issues.

Important Considerations:

  • Fluid Type: For your 2017 CR-V, depending on whether it has a CVT or a conventional automatic, you'll need either Honda HCF-2 (for CVTs) or Honda DW-1 (for 9-speed automatics in some trims). Double-check your owner's manual to confirm the correct fluid. Using the wrong fluid can cause irreversible damage.
  • Multiple Drain & Fills: Some owners perform 2-3 consecutive drain and fills over a few hundred miles to replace more of the old fluid, as a single drain and fill typically only replaces about 30-40% of the total fluid volume.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the shudder persists or worsens after a fluid change.
  • If you notice any warning lights on your dashboard (e.g., 'D' light flashing).
  • If there are any leaks or unusual noises from the transmission.
  • If you're unsure about the DIY process or the correct fluid type.
