Vehicle: 2018 Honda CR-V Touring

My 2018 Honda CR-V Touring has developed an annoying squeak and sometimes a light clunk from the rear suspension, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven roads. It's been happening for a few weeks now and seems to be getting a bit worse.

The car has about 70,000 miles on it. I haven't hit any major potholes recently. Any ideas what this could be? Is it safe to drive?

A squeak or clunk from the rear suspension of your 2018 Honda CR-V can indicate several issues, some minor, some requiring immediate attention.

Common Causes:

  1. Worn Bushings: Suspension components like control arms, sway bar links, and shock mounts use rubber bushings. Over time, these can dry out, crack, or wear, leading to squeaking or clunking noises as metal-on-metal contact occurs.
  2. Sway Bar Links: The end links connecting the sway bar to the suspension can wear out, causing a clunking sound, especially over bumps or when turning.
  3. Shock Absorbers: Worn or leaking rear shock absorbers can produce knocking sounds as they lose their dampening ability.
  4. Loose Components: Sometimes, a bolt or nut on a suspension component might have loosened, leading to play and noise.
  5. Coil Springs: Less common, but a broken coil spring or a displaced spring isolator could also cause noise.

What to Check/Do:

  • Visual Inspection: If safe, visually inspect the rear suspension components. Look for cracked rubber bushings, fluid leaks from shocks, or anything obviously loose.
  • Bounce Test: Push down on the rear of the car and release. If it bounces more than once or twice, your shocks might be failing.
  • Listen Carefully: Try to pinpoint the exact location of the noise. Is it left or right? Is it constant or only over specific types of bumps?

When to See a Shop: It's recommended to have your CR-V inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. While some noises might be benign, suspension issues can affect handling, tire wear, and overall safety. A professional can lift the vehicle, inspect all components under load, and accurately diagnose the source of the noise. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further damage to other suspension parts.
