Vehicle: 2023 Honda HR-V Sport

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an intermittent problem with the Honda Sensing suite on my new 2023 Honda HR-V Sport. Specifically, the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) will sometimes show a message on the dash saying "Honda Sensing System Unavailable" or "LKAS System Problem." It's not constant; it happens randomly, sometimes on clear days, sometimes in light rain, but never in heavy fog or snow.

When the message appears, the systems just stop working. After I turn the car off and restart it, they usually work again for a while. I've made sure the windshield is clean where the camera is located, and the radar sensor in the lower grille seems clear too. Is this a common glitch with the newer Honda Sensing systems, or could it be a sensor or module issue?

It's a brand new car, so I'm a bit concerned. Any insights would be great!

It's definitely concerning when safety features like Honda Sensing act up on a new vehicle. Intermittent unavailability of these systems can be caused by several factors, even if the external sensors appear clean.

  1. Environmental Factors (Beyond Obvious): While you've checked for visible obstructions, sometimes even a low sun angle, heavy glare, or specific types of road markings can temporarily confuse the camera or radar, leading to a temporary shutdown. However, if it's happening frequently on clear days, this is less likely to be the sole cause.
  2. Sensor Calibration: The camera behind the windshield and the radar unit in the front bumper are highly sensitive and require precise calibration. Even a minor bump or windshield replacement (if applicable) can throw off their alignment, causing intermittent issues. On a new car, this is less likely unless there was a factory defect or a very minor impact you're unaware of.
  3. Software Glitch: Similar to infotainment systems, the complex software controlling Honda Sensing can sometimes have bugs. A firmware update from the dealership might resolve the issue.
  4. Wiring/Connection Issues: An intermittent connection to one of the sensors (camera, radar) or the main control module could cause the system to drop out. This is harder to diagnose without specialized tools.
  5. Faulty Sensor or Module: The camera unit, radar unit, or the main Honda Sensing control module itself could have an internal fault, leading to the intermittent failures.

OBD Codes: When the Honda Sensing system reports an issue, it almost certainly stores diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the vehicle's computer, even if the check engine light isn't on. These would typically be U-codes (network communication errors) or B-codes (body electrical codes) specific to the Honda Sensing modules. Examples might include:

  • U0401: Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM A
  • U3000-XX: Control Module Malfunction (generic for module failure)
  • Specific codes related to the front radar sensor or multi-purpose camera unit.

When to See a Shop: Since your HR-V is a 2023 model, it's almost certainly under warranty. You should take it to a Honda dealership as soon as possible. They have the proprietary diagnostic tools to:

  • Read the specific Honda Sensing DTCs, which will pinpoint the exact fault.
  • Check for and install any available software updates for the system.
  • Perform sensor calibrations.
  • Diagnose and replace any faulty sensors or control modules under warranty. Do not attempt to fix this yourself, as it could void your warranty or lead to further issues with critical safety systems.
