Vehicle: 2020 Honda CR-V EX-L

Hi all,

I've got a 2020 Honda CR-V EX-L with about 40,000 miles, and for the past few weeks, I've been hearing a distinct clunking noise from the front end, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It's more noticeable at lower speeds.

It sounds like something is loose, but I'm not sure what to check. I've tried bouncing the front of the car, but I don't hear anything then. It's really only when the suspension is actively working over bumps.

Has anyone else experienced this with their CR-V? What are the common culprits for this kind of noise? I want to have some idea before I take it to the dealership.

A clunking noise from the front suspension over bumps on your 2020 Honda CR-V is a common complaint and usually points to worn or loose suspension components. Here are the most likely causes:

  1. Worn Stabilizer Bar Links (Sway Bar Links):

    • Cause: These links connect the sway bar to the suspension. Their bushings or ball joints can wear out, creating play and a clunking sound as the suspension moves.
    • Action: Visually inspect the links for damage or excessive play. A mechanic can often diagnose this by prying on the links while the vehicle is on a lift.
  2. Worn Control Arm Bushings:

    • Cause: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame. The rubber bushings at their pivot points can degrade over time, leading to metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement.
    • Action: Look for cracks or tears in the rubber bushings. This often requires a more thorough inspection by a professional.
  3. Loose or Worn Strut Mounts/Bearings:

    • Cause: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear out, allowing the strut to move excessively, or the bearing can fail, causing noise, especially when turning or going over bumps.
    • Action: Check for play at the top of the strut tower. Sometimes, the noise can be replicated by turning the steering wheel while stationary.
  4. Loose Lug Nuts or Wheel Bearings:

    • Cause: While less common for a clunk, loose lug nuts can cause a knocking sound. A severely worn wheel bearing can also produce various noises, including clunking.
    • Action: Always check lug nut torque first. A wheel bearing can be checked for play by rocking the wheel when the car is lifted.

When to See a Shop: Any persistent suspension noise should be addressed promptly. While some components might seem minor, they can affect handling, tire wear, and overall safety. A professional technician can accurately diagnose the source of the clunking noise and recommend the necessary repairs, ensuring your CR-V remains safe and comfortable to drive.
